PHYSICS 192 FALL 1998

EXPERIMENT TO DO THE WEEK OF SEPT 14

During the week of Sept 14,we will be doing

EXPERIMENT 2

Optical Micrometer

In place of Experiment 1, The Eye

In preparation for this experiment you should read the first two pages of Section 34-7, Reflection and Refraction, in "Fundamentals of Physics" by Halliday, Resnick and Walker.

Some changes under:

Procedure

Section 4. Rather than calculate the index of refraction for every angle of incidence, Q i, calculate sin Q i and sin Q r for all angles. Using all of these results make a graph with a linear fit on Kaleidagraph and obtain the index of refraction of the plastic material (Its commercial name is Lexan, its generic name is polycarbonate.)

Section 7. Although it is a lot trickier (why?), here too you could make a graph of the deflection, d, vs some function of Q i and obtain a value of the thickness of the block, D, to which you can compare your measured value. If you do this it will be worth a small amount of extra credit (+ or ++ on your lab report grade).
