Instructions for Using CAPA
CAPA is a "Computer-Assisted
Personalized
Approach
for assignments, quizzes and examinations." It is recommended that
you answer the questions and work the problems before you 'login' to the
computer. Discussion of concepts and methods of solving problems
with fellow students is also strongly encouraged.
Each assignment sheet has your Name and also a specific CAPA
ID
number. You may enter solutions either through vt100 emulation (Telnet)
or through the web.
Web Version:

To use the web version of CAPA, point your browser to the URL:

From the pull-down menu, choose phy183s0
-
Enter your student number and CAPA ID in the designated fields.

Click on the appropriate 'here' button to go to the main menu.

Choose 'Try Current Set'. Your assignment will then be displayed.
-
Follow the instructions before you, and remember to "Submit All Answers"
before you exit.
Telnet Version:

To connect to CAPA using a telnet session:
-
For computer lab PC's:
-
Select Class Software from the main menu.
-
Choose CAPA - Assignments
-
Choose Login to capa2
-
Follow the instructions. At the password: prompt, press the
return key.

You should next see the prompt login:
-
For computer lab Mac's:
-
Open the Class Software folder.
-
Open the CAPA folder.
-
Open the folder named capa2
-
You should next see the prompt login:
-
For access from wherever you can telnet:
-
Make sure that you are using VT100 terminal emulation.
-
Telnet to capa2.nscl.msu.edu
-
You should next see the prompt login:
-
To connect via modem:
-
Make sure that you are using VT100 terminal emulation.
-
Connect to Michnet by dialin 353-3500.
-
You will see the prompt host:
-
Enter capa2.nscl.msu.edu
-
You will receive an Access Controlled message and the prompt
login:
-
Enter your pilot ID (e.g. username@pilot.msu.edu).
-
You will receive the prompt Password:
-
Enter your pilot ID password.
-
You will then be connected to capa2, and you will see the prompt login:
-
NOTE: From PC's running windows, you may first need to start the
telnet application before entering the command to open a session to capa2.nscl.msu.edu.

At the login: prompt, enter phy183s0. Your terminal
screen should look like:

Enter STUDENT NUMBER and CAPA ID, hit ENTER/RETURN after each
STUDENT NUMBER:
CAPA ID:
To exit system, just hit ENTER/RETURN
The cursor on your screen should appear after the STUDENT NUMBER:
prompt. If it does not, your terminal is not set as a VT100.
Enter your Student Number and your CAPA ID from the
top of the assignment, then follow the instructions.
Credit for correct answers is registered after you exit properly by typing
'X'
and the return key twice.
After an incorrect response, a HINT may be available. It is viewed
by selecting :H in telnet, automatically on www.
Note: Do not 'open' multiple sessions and be sure to exit properly
each time you terminate a session.
