PHY 232: Introductory Physics II

PHY 232: Introductory Physics II (Spring Semester 2001)

Final Exam Wednesday May 2, 2001 8-10pm
1:50pm Lecture --> room 1281 ANH
3:00pm Lecture --> room 138 CEM

An alternative final exam will be offered to students who otherwise have 3 final exams scheduled for Wed. May 2.
It will be given 12:45-2:45 Thurs. May 3 in room 120 PA. In order to take this alternative final, you must send me e-mail that lists the two other courses you are enrolled in which have their regularly scheduled final exams on May 2.

Office hours during exam week:
Prof. Pratt: Tuesday and Wednesday 9:30-11:30am in room 214 PA.
Prof. Pumplin: Tuesday and Wednesday 1pm-3pm in room 127 PA.
To view your EXAM SCORES choose the option "E=view Exam summary" from the main capa menu. Exams are scored as 3 points per question. Qualitative questions are scored as 3 points for 3/3 correct, 1 point for 2/3 correct.

Exam 1: Average was 68%; 7 students scored 100%.

Exam 2: Average was 75%; 23 students scored 100%.

Exam 3: Average was 64%; 6 students scored 100%.

Exam 4: Average was 53%; 16 students scored 100%.

Final exam: Average was 62% (out of 18); 2 students scored 100% (out of 20).

Final grades have been sent out by e-mail.
Direct evidence (Spring Semester 2001) that it can be useful --- as well as tons-of-fun --- to go to class:
140 students took 3/3 quizzes; average grade in the course = 3.3
85 students took 2/3 quizzes; average grade in the course = 3.0
80 students took 1/3 quizzes; average grade in the course = 2.6
72 students took 0/3 quizzes; average grade in the course = 2.1

Similar Data from Spring Semester 2000:
Average grade for subset of students who were present for 2/2 quizzes: 3.6
Average grade for subset of students who were present for 1/2 quizzes: 3.1
Average grade for subset of students who were present for 0/2 quizzes: 2.2
Example of how to calculate your final grade:
Suppose your exam scores are: 13/30, 5/30, 12/30, 12/30.
The lowest exam score is dropped, so exam percentage is 100*(13+12+12)/90 = 41.11

Suppose you complete at least 203 of the 217 homework problems.
In scoring the homework, I allow 14 "free" problems, so your homework score will be 100.

Let X be the percentage score you get on the final (0 - 100).

Let Q be your points on quizzes (0-10) this week).

Grades are based on homework (25%), midterms (50%), the final exam (25%), and quizzes (bonus points).
Your point total will be T = 0.25*(homework score) + 0.50*(exam score) + 0.25*(score on final) + 0.5*Q
= 0.25*100 + 0.50*41.11 + 0.25*X + 0.5*Q
Suppose there are 3 quizzes and your scores on them are 2/3, 1/3, 3/4.
Then Q = 2 + 1 + 3 = 6.
That gives T = 48.56 + 0.25*X.
In order to get a grade of 2.0 in the course, you need T>61 according to the chart below
That will be achieved if you score at least 50% on the final.
