SCORING UNITS (20 pt.s each)

4 Midterms

1 unit each

Final Exam

2 units

Homework

1 unit

Of the seven units, six are from exams (midterms or final) and one is from homework. The exam unit with the lowest score will be dropped. If the lowest midterm grade is lower than the final exam grade, that midterm score will be dropped. If the final exam grade is lower than the lowest midterm grade, the final exam will then count as only one unit. The homework score can not be dropped. No make-ups for midterms will be offered without exceptional circumstances.
  • Exams can be "corrected" by logging onto LON-CAPA after 5:00 PM, the day of the exam, and finishing by 10:00 PM that Sunday. If beneficial, the exam score will be replaced with (3/4) original +(1/4) corrected score. "Correcting" means re-doing all problems, not just those that were incorrect.
  • Homework percentage will be calculated relative to 90% of the total possible HW points. (HW score = 20 * (HW points)/(0.9 * possible HW points). HW score will be capped at 20. This provides 10% buffer for technical problems. No extensions will be given for HW without exceptional circumstances. Students are responsible that they can find site that works. "The net was down when I tried to enter problems from Ohio" or "I couldn't get LON-CAPA to work from my parents computer" are not valid excuses, but "I have three weeks of chemotherapy" is a valid excuse.
  • Quizzes (PHY 231 only) will be given electronically in class. The quiz percentage will be calculated relative to 80% of possible quiz points (Quiz score = 5 * (quiz points)/(0.8 * possible quiz points). The quiz score will be capped at 5 and treated like extra credit. Absences for in-class quizzes will not be excused as the 80% rule allows for more than a reasonable number of absences.
  • Essay (PHY 231C only) can be used by on-line students to get up to 5 points of extra credit.
