Physics 422 -- Fall 2007

Homework #11, due Friday Dec. 7 at beginning of class

1. [8pts]    Marion & Thornton problem 13.5.

To clarify the statement of problem, you can think of the string as being in 0 < x < D.
The part of the string that has initial velocity v0 is D/2 - s < x < D/2 + s.
If you wish, you can assume s = D/4.

Solve the problem by the normal mode (Fourier series) method.

Also sketch the motion at various stages by using physical or wave superposition arguments.

2. [8pts]    Marion & Thornton problem 13.7
