PHYSICS 321  -  Classical Mechanics I

Spring 2007

Homework Set #2 (due 1/24/07)

1.            Thornton and Marion, Appendix A, problem A-2.  This means: Find a series expansion for an angle that is close to x = π/4.  Write cos x = cos(π/4+y) where y is small.

2.            Thornton and Marion, Appendix A, problem A-3.

3.            Thornton and Marion, problem 1-9.

4.            Thornton and Marion, problem 1-10.

5.            Thornton and Marion, problem 1-29. Hint: use the gradient function to find vectors perpendicular to each of the two surfaces at the specified point. Then use the scalar product to find the angle between those two vectors.

6.            Thornton and Marion, problem 1-40.
