Homework:

There will be 12 homework assignments, typically due on Wednesday at 9:00 am (see course schedule). MSU's LONCAPA (http://msu.loncapa.org) system will be used for the course homework One of the advantages of the LONCAPA system is in that students may enter solutions to questions and problems and know immediately if they are right. Incorrect answers may be entered many times without penalty and credit is earned if the correct answer is entered within a prescribed number of trials, prior to the due date.

Help:

The help room is BPS 1248 (Charles J. Strosacker Center).

One of the instructors will be available for help in the Center on:
Monday, 11:15 am - 2:15 pm
Tuesday, 1:00 - 3:00 pm
Wednesday, 3:00- 4:00 pm
Thursday, 3:00- 4:00 pm
Friday, 11:15 am - 1:15 pm

On-line help may also be requested. To receive it, send an e-mail to the user 'Help Please' within the LONCAPA system. Within the system, select the COM box and use the username: helpplease or select Help Please using the Select User menu. An instructor monitoring the e-mail should respond within 24h from the time of your e-mail arrival. In addition, there is a discussion forum within LONCAPA where students can post and answer questions.

Reading:

Students are expected to read the chapters listed in the course schedule prior to each lecture. There will be LONCAPA-based quizzes on the reading assignments, posted following each lecture, with a due date at 9:00 am on the day of the forthcoming lecture. The reading quizzes will, in particular, communicate to the lecturer difficulties in physics understanding of the material in the reading assignments; special attention will be dedicated to the problematic topics during the lecture. Those reading quizzes will contribute to the 7% of the quiz grade contribution.

Quizzes:

In addition, there will be unannounced short quizzes during lectures and recitations. For the quizzes and exams, you will need a calculator and a #2 pencil.

Exams: There will be three one-hour midterms and a final exam.
Grades: Course scores will be calculated based on the contributions listed below:
