Summary: I can only hope that the lack of reviews for this superb work is due to the fact that it was published before before Amazon was in vogue. James Trefil is, like many scientists, a wonderful writer who seeks to bring science to the masses. He does not dumb down the material but instead presents it in a fresh context.
In this collection of essays, he tells us what he is thinking as he sits outside at sunset. As such, we read about the color of the sky, time and calendars, sunspots, clouds and lightning. Interestingly, he retells current suppositions about lightning and the origin of life, namely that the former delivers an incredible amount of energy - enough to give life the kick it needed. Great book.

Summary: Every civilization has attempted to explain how the world came to be, from the creation epics of antiquity to the impressive evidence acquired through modern scientific methods. In "The Moment of Creation, "physicist James Trefil--one of the founders of modern quark theory--recounts the recent explosion of knowledge about the early universe. After a brief historical introduction, he traverses the eons to bring readers within the first millisecond of the Big Bang. Trefil employs minimal mathematics to explain gauge theories, and he provides a fast track for those more interested in cosmology than physics. Compelling and lucid, his narrative not only offers a remarkable view of the universe's beginnings, but also speculates about its end. 1983 ed. 58 figures. 7 halftones.

Summary: A substantial revision of the author's well-known work on mirror symmetry and asymmetry, this volume explores the two fundamental scientific discoveries of the past century: the asymmetric DNA helix and the overthrow of parity (left-right symmetry) in particle physics. Along the way, students will find absorbing, thought-provoking treatments of some of the deepest mysteries in modern physics. Author of more than 60 books and creator of "Scientific American's "Mathematical Games column, Martin Gardner has influenced and inspired generations of scientists, scholars, and other readers. This republication of his 1990 revised edition of an earlier work features a new appendix of notes and corrections.
