PHYSICS 321  -  Classical Mechanics I

Spring 2010

Homework Set #3 (due 2/3/10)

1.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-4.

2.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-8.

3.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-9.

4.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-12.

5.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-37.  Attempted clarification: the force is F = 360 – 107t2 with F in Newtons, t in seconds (and so the units of the constant 107 are, of course, in N.s-2).  Hint: Start by finding the time at which the force becomes zero.

6.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-54.

7.            Thornton and Marion, problem 9-55. Just calculate the maximum velocity; ignore the
last sentence in the question.
