WEEKLY EXAMS
- With the exception of the weekly exam, each weekly exam will be available, online for you to complete between 6:00PM on Thursday and 3:00PM on Friday. Due to the 4th of July holiday, the first weekly exam will be available between 6PM on Friday, July 6 and 3PM on Saturday, July 7th. You should schedule an uninteruppted 45 minute block of time each week during this time window to complete each weekly online exam.
- There are no makeup weekly exams. However, we realize that sometimes stuff happens that is beyond your control. With this in mind, if you are unable to take a weekly exam for any reason you will be allowed to drop this exam and the weekly exam portion of your final grade will be based on the other weekly exams. Only one weekly exam will be dropped. If you take all of the weekly exams, your lowest weekly exam score will be dropped when calculating your final grade.
- Some of the questions on each weekly exam will come from modified* homework problems.
- Exam questions will be both numeric and conceptual, e.g. true/false, less than/greater than equal to, ranking, direction of vector, etc.
- The format will be multiple choice with ten separate responses on each exam.
- You willl transmit your responses by clicking on the appropriate "bubble" and then clicking the "submit answer" button. You can change your response during the timed exam and Lon-Capa will accept your last response as your official response to the question.
- Lon-Capa feedback is turned off during the exam, so after submitting each response you should receive a confirmation stating "Answer Submitted: Your final submission will be graded after the due date."
- Access to other areas of Lon-Capa will be limited during the weekly exams.
- The time limit for each weekly exam will be 40 minutes plus an additional 5 minutes for connection/transmission of your responses.
- One you start the exam you will have 45 minutes
to complete the exam, including transmission. The timer will continue counting down even if you leave Lon-Capa (e.g. if you leave Lon-Capa, say 5 minutes into an exam and return after 30 minutes later you will have 10 minutes left to comlete the exam).
- It is a requirement for this course that you have a reliable, high-speed internet connection. If your connection is not reliable and you are unable to finish the exam as a result, you will have to use this exam as your one dropped weekly exam.
- Grading scales for exams will not be curved unless there was mis-wording or an error.
- It is strongly advised that you construct a set of notes on a single 5 inch by 8 inch card when completing each weekly exam. These note cards should be sufficient to assist you on the weekly exam and will help you put together your two double-sided note sheets you are permitted to use on the final exam. These weekly exams should be taken closed book, individually and without browing through lon-capa, or other areas on the internet.
- Attempting to search the internet or through texts for solutions to the weekly exam provblems will almost certainly result in running out of time to complete the exam. Also, you should not work in groups on these exams. Aside from the of questionable integrity of following such practices, these resources will not be available to you on the final exam. Habitually following these practices will almost certainly result in a very low final exam score and consequently, a low final grade.
- Access to other areas of Lon-Capa will be restricted during the weekly exams.
- Submitting your answers in an online exam works slightly different than in a traditional exam. Here is an EXAMPLE. Furthermore, correct/incorrect feedback is disabled. The number of tries per problem is set to 20, so you can change your mind and resubmit an answer to a question. The last submission you make on a question will be your official response.
*-- Modified could mean that if the original problem gave x and asked for y, the modified problem might give y and ask for x. For conceptual problems, modified could mean covering the same concept.
