The Calorimeter HV was off at the time and basically we could not see noise on any of these channels. We turned the Calorimeter HV back on, just to the Central Calorimeter, and saw the following: +2,25 EM OK with HV off, HV on sparks 0.1 Hz looks like real signal -4,7 EM&HD OK with HV off, HV on both make sparks -4,25 HD OK with HV off, HV on sparks 0.2 Hz looks like spark ringing +5,23 EM OK with HV off, HV on sparks 1 Hz looks like real signal +8,28 EM OK with HV off, not tested today with HV on -6,22 EM OK with HV off, Hv on pulse every 4 usec 100 mv undulate 30 usec -6,28 EM OK with HV off, HV on bursts of high freq and pulses +9,21 EM OK with HV off, not tested today with HV on -9,22 HD OK with HV off, not tested today with HV on Because this noise came back with the Calorimeter HV turned back ON we thought that perhaps the source is in the Calorimeter (and not in the electronics). So on 12-JUNE-2003 we made some quick runs with a Reference Set looking at just a single one of the noisy TT's. On that day we make quick runs to look at: +5,53 -4,7 and -4,25. On 19-JUNE-2003 Dean had finished looking at these runs and reported: For TT +5,23: Detector channel Ieta=+10, Iphi= 45, Ilayer=7 is the cause For TT -4,7: Detector channel Ieta=-8, Iphi= 14, Ilayer=13 is the cause For TT -4,25: Detector channel Ieta=-7, Iphi= 49, Ilayer=13 has the highest probability of being the problem, but (-7,50,13) and (-7,50,11) are also possible...or maybe there are more than one problem in that area Looking at the currently Excluded list you see two things: About half of the time they have been excluded in clumps (typically 2 or 3) at the same time when there was trouble with rates during beam running. I expect that many/most of these channels are OK most of the time and only act up every so often. Most of the Excluded channels are near a Trigger Tower phi of 24. Ignoring the entry for TT phi of 7, all the rest of the Excluded channels are between TT phi of 21 and 28. The average TT phi of these Excluded channels is 23.8 In TT coordinates, straight down is the boarder between phi 24 and 25. The full history of Excluded channels is long and complicated. In the beginning most of the problems could be traced to an electrical problem on a summer or driver circuit board. These were repaired and then we stopped Excluding that channel. In the beginning we also needed to Excluded some channels because we could not control their pedestal on the Term-Attn-Brd. These Term-Attm-Brd's have been repaired. Currently no channels are Excluded because we can not control their pedestal. Cut Resistors in Trigger Tower Summers +1,24 EM had sparking noise that was coming from a single calorimeter element in the sum for this TT. The resistor for Tower 2 Depth 6 and that stopped most of the noise in the trigger pickoff signal. This resistor was cut on 4:8-MAR-2003 and the log book has more details. We had the same problem with +1,24 EM in Run I. The log book for 4:8-MAR-2003 has a review of all cut resistors in Run I. Partial List of Trigger Towers that were but are no longer Excluded --------------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a partial list of Trigger Towers signals that at one time were Excluded but are now no longer Excluded. Typicall a TT is excluded either because we can not control its pedestal or because it has too much noise to use in the trigger. 10-APR-2003 Dean fixed the BLS for +3,26 so we stop Excluding it. We had started Excluding +3,26 EM on 7-DEC-2002. 19-NOV-2002 7 Term-Attn-Brd's were replaced to fix pedestal control problems that required us to have excluded the following 7 signals: +4,17 EM +5,9 HD +5,27 HD +5,30 HD +6,10 HD +6,29 HD +6,31 HD Replacing these 7 Term-Attn-Brd's only fixed +4,17 EM and +5,9 HD. The real problem with the other 5 TT's is lots of noise from the BLS. Stop Excluding +4,17 EM and +5,9 HD. Continue to Exclude the other 5 TT's. 25-NOV-2002 The BLS cards for +5,27 HD +5,30 HD +6,10 HD +6,29 HD +6,31 HD have now all been repaired. Run Find_DAC and these TT's are now OK so stop Excluding them. 11-DEC-2002 Replace the Term-Attn-Brd's for TT's: -11,19 -6,9 +10,27 These 3 Term-Attn-Brd's all had pedestal DAC control problems. These had been channels with individual problems since they were installed.
