Trigger Tower Repair Work Log Book ---------------------------------------------- Original Rev. 3-OCT-2002 Current Rev. 29-AUG-2003 This is the log book for all work done to repair the Trigger Tower signals. The Trigger Towers are listed in the standard signed eta,phi Trigger Tower Index system. They start from the most negative eta. At a given eta the phi's run in the 1 to 32 order. The EM and HD components of a Trigger Tower are listed together. The first line of the entry for a given Trigger Tower indicates if there is currently a known problem with that tower. All other repair information about that tower follows in chronological order. -17,26 HD Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 27-JUN-03 On the pedestal plot it looks only 1/2 normal width. BLS Signals look OK. Will check this CTFE with the pulser before looking at this BLS. -14,2 HD Trigger Tower Currently is OK. 28-JUL-03 On the pedestal plot it looks flat. Philippe reports it constantly bad in Find_DAC. BLS signals look OK. There is a center conductor to center conductor short on the CTFE. Next Cal Trig power down repair this CTFE. 14-AUG-03 Repair the center conductor short on the CTFE. -13,18 EM Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 11-JUN-03 Almost no signal observed in the plot. No signal on the + side of the cable. The signal on the - side looks OK. The cable does not look shorted. During access look at this BLS. BLS Coord. 0-2-2 2-JUL-03 BLS card checked and it looked OK -13,32 EM Trigger Tower Currently is OK. 11-JUN-03 No signal on the upper part of the pedestal plot, and almost no signal on the lower part of the plot. There is symmetric noise on each side of the cable so it is not shorted and it is plugged in. There is nothing that looks like a real BLS trigger pickoff signal on either side of the cable. During access look at this BLS. BLS Coord. 11-11-2 2-JUL-03 Both EM & HD drivers were missing. Installed drivers. -12,18 EM Trigger Tower Currently is OK. 11-JUN-03 No signal on the upper part of the pedestal plot, and almost no signal on the lower part of the plot. No BLS Trigger pickoff signal on either side of the cable. There is some L1_Acpt noise pickup that you can see on both sides of the cable - so the cable is not shorted and it is plugged in. During access look at this BLS. BLS Coord. 0-2-1 2-JUL-03 The EM driver was missing. Installed appropriate driver. -12,22 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-AUG-02 HD sees only 50% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS HD Driver replaced - now this TT is OK. -12,32 Trigger Tower Currently is OK NOV-02 "Dribbly" EM gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (all dead) EM#0 BLS summer. -11,1 HD Trigger Tower Currently is OK 8-July-03 Reported to have zero pedestal width. Check with scope and there is no signal on either side of the BLS cable. The problem is at the BLS end. Add this to the "next access work list". 28-JUL-03 The HD driver was installed backwards. Install new driver. -11,6 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-AUG-02 No EM input signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 Cable was loose at BLS end - now this TT is OK. -11,7 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-AUG-02 No EM input signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks BAD, there is no EM output signal from the Term-Attn-Brd, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Between Stores: Repair the Term-Attn-Brd 12-DEC-02 Replaced the Term-Attn-Brd. -11,11 Trigger Tower Currently is OK June-02 Hot Tower It was necessary to unplug this TT. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (very noisy) EM#3 BLS summer. Then build a new BLS for this TT, all new trigger pickoff components. We are running with this new BLS card. Plug this TT back in. -11,14 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 30-AUG-02 EM sees only 50% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable has an EM+ short. Access Time: Repair the cable. -11,24 Trigger Tower Currently is OK NOV-02 "Dribbly" HD gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (all dead) HD#2 BLS summer. -11,30 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-AUG-02 No HD input signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS HD Driver replaced - now this TT is OK. -10,2 Trigger Tower Currently is OK NOV-02 "Dribbly" EM gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (all dead) EM#2 BLS summer. -10,5 Trigger Tower is OK. 30-SEP-02 EM see only about 50% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test shows that this is an even eta EM channel with a correct R80 terminator resistor, but its gain has not been set back to normal in the Bob_4 gains file. Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable appears OK. Edit the gains file --> Bob_5. NOV-02 "Dribbly" EM gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (all dead) EM#1 BLS summer. -10,8 Trigger Tower Currently is OK NOV-02 "Dribbly" HD gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (all dead) HD#0 BLS summer. -9,22 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 6-DEC-02 -9,22 HD has too much noise to run. Exclude -9,22 HD. 14-AUG-03 Check with scope and see no problem on -9,22 HD. Check again and if OK - ready to try a run with -9,22 HD not Excluded. 29-AUG-03 Checked on a scope. See once per N minutes massive pulse that sometimes saturates and often has an after pulses. Make a single TT Ref Set run. Collect 21 events in Run # 180,685. Precision Readout is clearly involved. There are 10's of GeV in 20% of the Calorimeter channels. There is a ridge of stuff at the most negative eta, a ridge in the center, and a ridge at the most positive eta. Mostly blue with some red. When -8,9 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 24-AUG-03 -8,9 HD has too much noise to run. -8,9 HD is Excluded. 26-AUG-03 Check -8,9 HD with scope - see 150 mV noise pulse associated with readout. This is not the standard SMT pickup noise. -8,25 Trigger Tower Currently is OK June-02 Hot Tower It was necessary to unplug this TT. 19-NOV-02 Can not see any problems with this BLS card in the test stand. Build a new BLS for this TT, all new trigger pickoff components. We are now running with this new BLS card. Plug this TT back in. -7,7 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-SEP-02 EM has no input signal, HD has only about 80% of expected input signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable appears OK. Access Time: Check cable then BLS 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. 19-NOV-02 Found a shorted BLS Cable at the L1 Cal Trig end. Repaired it. -6,1 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. NOV-02 "Dribbly" EM gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (depth 7 dead) EM#1 BLS summer. Replaced this summer twice and this channel is still dead. Open trace ? -6,22 Trigger Tower Currently ready to test not Excluded. 8-JAN-03 -6,22 EM has too much noise to Run. -6,22 EM is Excluded. 30-MAY-03 With HV off no sparks. HV on 100 mV spark every 4 usec. 31-JUL-03 40-50 mV spark every 2 usec. Make single TT Ref Set run. There does not appear to be energy in the Precision Readout Need to test the BLS again in the Test Stand. 14-AUG-03 Now this is understood to actually be a Pre-Amp problem. For now Dean cut (eta,phi,layer)= -11,44,7 (crate,adc,bls, tower,depth)=2,10,3,1,6. This also had noise in Cal precision readout. Now this TT looks OK on scope. Ready to make a test of not Excluding -6,22 EM. -6,25 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 24-AUG-03 -6,25 EM has too much noise to run. -6,25 EM is Excluded. 26-AUG-03 Check -6,25 EM with a scope - see 100 to 150 mV noise pulse every about 20 usec. -6,28 Trigger Tower Currently ready to test not Excluded. 4-JAN-03 -6,22 EM has too much noise to Run. -6,22 EM is Excluded. 30-MAY-03 With HV off no sparks. With HV on see bursts of high frequency noise and pulses. 31-JUL-03 Once every couple of minutes see a big (800 mV) long rise time (1100 nsec) pulse. Make single TT Ref Set run. See energy in Precision Readout. Collect 18 events in 1.2 hr. 14-AUG-03 Dean cut (eta,phi,layer)= -12,56,1 (crate,adc,bls,tower, depth)=9,2,7,3,0. Cutting this resistor reduced the size of the spark in the Trigger signal by a factor of 30. Ready to make a test of not Excluding -6,28 EM. -5,3 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-Sept-02 EM sees only about 50% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check the cable then the BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff tested OK. Nothing was done to fix this TT but now in examine runs it appears OK. -5,14 Trigger Tower Currently is OK NOV-02 "Dribbly" HD gain distribution. 19-NOV-02 Replace defective (sole depth dead) HD#3 BLS summer. -4,7 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 22-AUG-02 HD sees only 50% of expected signal. 4-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end there is possible open cable. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. 30-OCT-02 Bob & Joe check the Cal Trig end again using the Hand Pulser. CTFE-Term-Attn-Brd look OK again. 9-APR-03 Too much noise, Exclude -4,7 EM 9-APR-03 Too much noise, Exclude -4,7 HD AUG-03 Dean has identified but not yet cut the resistor for Physics = -8,14,13 Elec = 9,10,7,3,9 part of -4,7 HD 14-AUG-03 Make a single TT Total Et Ref Set run, Run # 180,098. Did see energy in the Precision Cal Readout during this run (mostly Blue but some Red). -4,25 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 9-APR-03 HD has too much noise to run. -4,25 HD is Excluded. 30-MAY-03 With HV off -4,25 HD looks OK. With HV on you see a spark at about 0.2 Hz that looks like spark ringing. 12-JUN-03 Make a run with a single TT Ref Set to collect spark events from -4,25 HD. 14-AUG-03 Make a single TT Tot Et Ref Set run, Run # 180,104. Collect 25 events and can see noise in Cal Precision. -3,7 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 22-AUG-02 HD sees only 50% of expected signal. 4-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end there is possible open cable. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. 30-OCT-02 Bob & Joe check the Cal Trig end again using the Hand Pulser. CTFE-Term-Attn-Brd look OK again. -2,1 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 17-SEP-02 No HD input signal. 4-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestals are OK, From L1 end there is possible open cable. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. 19-NOV-02 During access found a bent center conductor pin in the BLS Cable BLS Backplane Connector. The pin broke off. Plan is to 2x the BLS Driver Gain and run single ended. -2,5 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 22-AUG-02 HD sees only 50% of expected signal. 4-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the possible HD- open cable. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. 19-NOV-02 During access found a bent center conductor pin in the BLS Cable BLS Backplane Connector. The pin broke off. Plan is to 2x the BLS Driver Gain and run single ended. -2,7 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 27-OCT-02 Possible cross wired with -1,7 -2,7 -3,7 -4,7 30-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check cable then BLS. 19-NOV-02 During access found a 2 bent over Gnd pins in the BLS Cable BLS Backplane Connector. They broke off while being straightened, so put a jumper wire on the Gnd side in the BLS Cable connector at the BLS end. -2,19 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem. 30-Sept-02 EM sees only about 34% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test looks OK, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Access Time: Check the cable then the BLS. 22-OCT-02 BLS Trig Pickoff Tested OK. -2,28 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 30-Sept-02 EM sees only 145% of expected signal. 17-OCT-02 Hand Pulser test shows a problem, EM- looks not terminated or something like that, Pedestal is OK, From L1 end the cable looks OK. Between Stores: Repair Term-Attn-Brd 12-DEC-02 Repaired the Term-Attn-Brd. -1,4 Trigger Tower Currently is OK 22-AUG-02 HD sees only 50% of expected signal. 4-OCT-02 CTFE Pulser test NOT OK, HD side is not OK, EM is OK HD- = HD+ but both are only 60% of expected value Both Pedestals look OK, From CTFE end there is No obvious cable problem. Exclude +2,29 HD. 14-AUG-03 On the scope it has about 100 mV of noise on both sides of the differential cable. Record a single TT Ref Set run - run # 180,051. We did see noise in the Precision Cal Trig readout at +2,29 HD during this run. +4,17 Trigger Tower Currently is OK June-02 Can not control the pedestal of +4,17 EM, it is Excluded. 19-NOV-02 Replace the Term-Attn-Brd. Find_DAC is now happy with this trigger tower. The real problem is 30 GeV of noise coming to the Cal Trig on the BLS cable - sawtooth waveform 425 nsec period. 22-NOV-02 With this BLS card in the test stand Bob can see the oscillation. Replacing one summer fixes it. 25-NOV-02 Run Find_DAC and it looks OK. Stop Excluding this tower. +6,10 Trigger Tower Currently is OK June-02 Can not control the pedestal of +6,10 HD, it is Excluded 19-NOV-02 Replace the Term-Attn-Brd. Find_DAC is still not happy with this trigger tower. Output 0:100 sigma 25. The real problem is 30 GeV of noise coming to the Cal Trig on the BLS cable - sawtooth waveform 425 nsec period. 22-NOV-02 With this BLS card in the test stand Bob can see the oscillation. Replacing one summer fixes it. 25-NOV-02 Run Find_DAC and it looks OK. Stop Excluding this tower. +6,21 Trigger Tower Currently has a problem and is Excluded. 18-JUN-03 +6,21 EM has too much noise to run. +6,21 EM is Excluded. 31-JUL-03 Once every few minutes see a pulse of 100 to 150 mV that takes 700 nsec to rise and goes to a sharp point. Tried to collect events with a single TT Ref Set. 14-AUG-03 Look with a scope and can see noise pulses 100mV to very big on +6,21 EM. Need to make a single TT Ref Set Run. 29-AUG-03 Make a single TT Ref Set run on +6,21 EM run # 180,686 I'm not certain how man events were collected about 5. Did not see the event display so Precision Readout ?? +6,23 Trigger Tower Currently ready to test not Excluded. 3-JUN-03 +6,23 EM has too much noise to run. +6,23 EM is Excluded. 31-JUL-03 150 to 200 mV pulse once every 5 to 6 usec. Run with a single TT Ref Set and we do see a small amount of energy in the Precision Readout. +6,23 had a cut resistor in Run I. 14-AUG-03 Dean says +6,23 EM is also high noise in Precision readout. Dean thinks this is a Pre-Amp problem. For now he cut (eta,phi,layer)= +11,46,7 (crate,adc,bls,tower,depth)= 3,1,3,0,6. +6,23 EM now looks OK on the scope.
