Below is a draft proposal and charge for an official review of Level 2 convened by Jim Christenson. Note that only Global and Cal are part of the charge unless I hear otherwise. Jerry and I will be making an agenda next week with specific speakers. The general idea will be physicists at the processor and block diagram level, and engineers for the technical details. Please pass this along and make travel plans. I would guess that likely speakers are: Overview Linnemann Alpha Martin MBT Baden, then Giganti and/or Bard SLIC,SFO,CIC Fortner, then Sippach? (Gara is not available) FIC Renardy Global Moore Cal Varelas This will be iterated and actual times alotted, but I am sure that the folks listed can expect to speak. I would like transparencies on the web by 8am Eastern time Thursday 4 February. Jim Sufficient progress has been made in defining and designing the Level 2 Trigger system that it can now be reviewed as is our established practice of setting the specific implementation of components of the Dzero Upgrade. We would like you to help with this important review. The review is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 1999. This date would allow the trigger folks to carefully consider the results of the review at the Trigger Workshop in March and would allow some key members of the Level 2 operation to attend the review. We imagine that a day would be devoted to presentations and discussion, followed by a relatively brief written report. Review Panel: Boris Baldin, Amber Boehnlein, Alan Jonckheere, Rick van Kooten, Dean Schamberger, Mark Strovink (chair), Gordon Watts, Darien Wood Date: Saturday, February 6, 1999 Review Agenda: To be drafted by the Trigger Project managers Jim Linnemann and Jerry Blazey, in consultation with the Chair. Draft Charge: Review the Level 2 Trigger project as described in the Technical Design Reports and report in writing to the Upgrade Project Managers and the Spokespersons. This Review will cover Level 2 Global and the Calorimeter Preprocessor, as well as their components: Alpha processor, Magic Bus Transceiver (MBT), Second Level Input Computer (SLIC) and Fiber Interface Converter (FIC). Other Preprocessors will be dealt with in subsequent specific reviews administered by the Trigger Manager directly. The Review should be based on the written TDRs, presentations by the Trigger group and discussions during the Review. You should consider whether the design and implementation of the system is consistent with the physics goals of the experiment in Run II, including possible expansion of the system to accommodate STT triggers. You should explore the system design to determine whether it is comprehensive and sound. Does it accomplish the goals efficiently and in a cost-effective manner? Please include the following topics in your deliberations: Bandwidth capability Error detection, recovery Event buffering Trigger bit hierarchy, relationship to Level 1 Downloading and verification of same Debugging and evaluation of trigger performance All the Level 2 documentation you ever dreamed of can be found at: www.pa.msu.edu/hep/d0/l2 Thanks - Jim Christenson 630-840-4894
