***** CALORIMETER TRIGGER CABLING REQUIREMENTS **** Created: 16-APR-1990 Lengths Provided: 1-OCT-1990 Lengths Continued: 3-OCT-1990 INTRODUCTION ------------ This file is an attempt to begin to classify the amount and types of cabling required for the Summer 1990 run of the Calorimeter Trigger. It includes cables required for Tier 3, presuming that Tier 3 will be present. If Tier 3 is not present, these cables will still be used "eventually." Also, the BLS - CTFE cabling is included in this listing, although it is not provided by MSU, because we must consider that cable in our layout plans. CLASSES OF CABLES ----------------- There are several classes of cables required for Summer 1990 operation: CLASS TYPE QTY ===== ==== === BLS -> T1 Input Cables 8 x 16 x (1 x BLS - 1 x CTFE) BLS >128 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- T1 -> T2 EM Et Adder 2 x (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 16 T1 -> T2 HD Et Adder 2 x (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 16 T1 -> T2 +Px Adder (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 8 T1 -> T2 -Px Adder (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 8 T1 -> T2 +Py Adder (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 8 T1 -> T2 -Py Adder (8 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT2) 34 - 34 8 T1 -> T2 EM Et Cnt 1-4 (all 8 Counter Trees) 2 x (1 x CHTCR - 8 x CAT2) 50 - 4 x 12 16 T1 -> T2 EM Tot Et Cnt 1-4 (all 8 Counter Trees) 2 x (1 x CHTCR - 8 x CAT2) 50 - 4 x 12 16 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- T2 -> T3 EM Et Adder (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 2 T2 -> T3 HD Et Adder (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 2 T2 -> T3 Px Adder (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 2 T2 -> T3 Py Adder (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 2 T2 -> T3 EM Et Cnt 1-4 (all 8 Counter Trees) 4 x (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 8 T2 -> T3 EM Tot Et Cnt 1-4 (all 8 Counter Trees) 4 x (2 x CAT2 - 1 x CAT3) 34 - 34 8 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- T3 -> T3 Tot Et Adder 2 x (2 x CAT3 - 1 x CAT3) 36? - 36? 4 T3 -> T3 Missing Pt Logic (2 x CAT3 - 1 x FMLN) 36/48? - 36/48? 2 (probably 50) T3 -> VME Px, Py values (1 x FMLN - 1 x VMExxx) 64? - 64? 1 T3 -> Framework Input Terms >12 x (1 x CATn - 1 x Patch Panel) 34(8) - 34(8) 12 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- M114 -> T1 Mother Boards 8 x (1 x BBB - 1 x CTMBD) 64 - 64 8 M114 -> T2 Mother Board (1 x BBB - 1 x CTMBD) 64 - 64 1 M114 -> T3 Mother Board (1 x BBB - 1 x CTMBD) 64 - 64 1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTIONS --------- 1. How big are the BLS - CTFE cables? How well do they bend? 2. How many Framework Input Terms will the Calorimeter Trigger supply? How will they be transmitted (what cable size). 3. How many thresholds are we interested in for: EM/HD/Total Adders MPt EM/Total Counters (never talked about more of these...) Note: question 3 has minimal bearing on cabling (only Tier 3 to Framework Input terms, but it still important for Tier 3 Backplane construction. 4. What changes need to be made in the CAT2 paddleboards? DEEPER NOTCH, CUT OFF ENDS, DON'T KNOW ABOUT HEIGHT 5. How will the cables be routed, in detail? 6. Which outputs (corrected/uncorrected) feed the next Tier? What about the EMt + HDt = Tot Et adder? (corrected EM/HD output to some readout card, uncorrected to the Tot Et adder? Or other way 'round?) 7. Where are the 1LU and 2LU separated? 8. The CAT3 corrected sum output is 24 bits, therefore use a 50-conductor connector/cables... FURTHER DESCRIPTION OF EACH CLASS --------------------------------- 1. BLS -> T1 Input Cables: (>128) These are the "ribbon coax" cables provided in hopefully a reasonable order. We must determine how they rest in channels, and what holds them in. They are heavy. Current thought (28-SEP-1990): Panduit plastic cable conduit, 6' x 4" x 2", with slotted sides. These will be attached somehow to the C-channel and also hold the T1 --> T2 cables. 2. T1 -> T2 EM Adder Cables: (16) These are the 34-conductor twist'n'flat, with 34-pin headers on each end. They come from the front of the T1 CAT2's (UNCORRECTED OUTPUT), and go to the rear of the T2 CAT2's. They will be routed up from the T1 CAT2's, above the racks (how far up?), and enter the rear from the TOP. The average length of these cables should be about 10 to 15 feet. (Note: these cables come in 18-inch sections). 3. T1 -> T2 HD Et Adder Cables: (16) These are identical to the above cables. EM, HD Adder Cable Lengths #Sections Quantity --------- -------- 8 2 9 8 10 10 11 6 12 2 13 2 14 2 -- Total: 32 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. T1 -> T2 +Px Adder Cables: (8) Same as above, except (a) only 8 cables, and (b) the input mapping is somewhat different. 5. T1 -> T2 -Px Adder Cables (8) 6. T1 -> T2 +Py Adder Cables (8) 7. T1 -> T2 -Py Adder Cables (8) These three groups are as above. Px, Py Adder Cable Lengths #Sections Quantity --------- -------- 8 4 9 10 10 10 11 8 -- Total: 32 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8. T1 -> T2 EM Et Cnt 1-4 (16) These cables are similar in length to the Adder Tree cables, but they are quite different in structure. Each Tier 1 CHTCR has 2, 50-pin connectors on the front panel. A 50-pin header, with 50-conductor cable loaded in, will attach to each of these connectors. This 50-conductor cable will split into 4, 12-conductor cables (and an unused 2-conductor pair). Each of these 12-conductor "slices" will be loaded into a 34-conductor header, each of which will plug into a DIFFERENT Tier 2 CAT2. Thus, 1 Tier 1 CHTCR feeds 8 Tier 2 CAT2's. Note also that the 4 "splits" (NOT the the cables) are of different length, with 4 being the shortest, and 1 being the longest. The cables should only be split for as long as necessary (that is, not for the entire length). 9. T1 -> T2 Tot Et Cnt 1-4 (16) These cables are as described above, with somewhat different lengths. EM Et/Tot Et 1-4 Counter Cable Lengths #Sections Quantity --------- -------- 8 1 9 3 10 7 11 10 12 7 13 3 14 1 -- Total: 32 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. T2 -> T3 EM Et Adder (2) These cables come from the (UNCORRECTED) output on the front of the Tier 2 CAT2's, and go to the rear of the Tier 3 CAT3's. Again, it is thought that they will go over the top of the racks, and enter Tier 3 from ABOVE. The average length of these cables will be 11 feet. They will be 34-conductor twist'n'flat cables, with 34-pin headers on each end. 11. T2 -> T3 HD Et Adder (2) 12. T2 -> T3 Px Adder (2) 13. T2 -> T3 Py Adder (2) These three groups are as above 14. T2 -> T3 EM Et Cnt 1-4 (8) These are as above, except they end on Tier 3 CAT2 cards (not CAT3 cards). 15. T2 -> T3 Tot Et Cnt 1-4 (8) 16. T3 -> T3 Total Et Adder (4) These cables come from the front outputs of the Tier 3 EM/HD Adder CAT3's, and go to the back of the Tier 3 Total Et Adder CAT3's. These numbers will be at least 18 bits wide, and hence will not fit on a 34-conductor cable. Note that the 1LU and 2LU are already split up here, and hence require 2 Total Et Adder CAT3's, with 4 cables. The CAT3's cannot be simply bussed together on the backplane. 17. T3 -> T3 Missing Pt Logic (2) These are the cables which come from the (UNCORRECTED) output on the front of the Tier 3 CAT3 cards which compute Px and Py. They will go either to the front or the back (likely back) of the yet-to-be-designed FMLN card. 18. T3 -> VME Px, Py values (1) This is the cable that comes from either the front or the back (likely front) of the FMLN card, to provide the signed Px, Py values to a VME processor to compute the value of Pt = (Px^2 + Py^2)^0.5. 19. T3 -> Framework Input Terms (>12) These are the cables that ship the results of comparisons performed on the Tier 3 CAT2, CAT3, FMLN cards to a Patch Panel, to provide inputs to the Trigger Framework IML's. These cables come from the front of the Tier 3 cards, and go to the Patch Panel in some undecided location. It is unknown exactly how many are required, as the number of global thresholds is currently undecided. It will certainly be greater than 12, probably closer to 20. The Tier 3 cards have 34-conductor headers, of which 8 conductors are used. It is not decided which cable width, and which connector width on each end (can be different) is to be used. Probably 34-conductor cable, 34-position header on Tier 3 end, 8-position header (if available) on Patch Panel end. These cables will be no greater than 21 feet in length. 20. M114 -> T1 Mother Boards (8) These cables come from the back of the BBB's in Rack M114, and go to the back of the CTMBD's in Tier 1. The Tier 1 CTMBD's are located in the middle of each Tier 1 Crate. These cables will be 64-conductor twist'n'flat cables, with 64-pin headers on each end. They will run along the bottom rear of the racks. They will be approximately 24 feet long. 21. M114 -> T2 Mother Board (1) These are as above. Note that Tier 2 CTMBD's are at the bottom of each Tier 2 Crate to reduce interference between the CTMBD cables coming from the bottom, and the CAT2 cables coming from the top. 22. M114 -> T3 Mother Board (1) These are as above. It is not yet known where the Tier 3 CTMBD's will be, but they will probably be at the bottom of the rack as well.
