***************************************** * D-ZERO CALORIMETER TRIGGER * * TIER 2/TIER 3 PADDLEBOARDS * ***************************************** 19-SEP-1990 Update to current status: 5-NOV-1990 OVERVIEW -------- Each Tier 2/Tier 3 CAT2 card has up to 8 separate inputs (6 inputs for CAT3), on 3 96-pin DIN connectors (the 4th is for CBUS). The Paddleboard provides a convenient way to bring these 8 (6) inputs out to 8 (6) separate connectors, to allow a separate cable to feed each input. It also provides much nicer connectors (e.g. ejector ears, stress-relief tabs) than simply plugging in to the exposed Backplane pins. ELECTRICAL ---------- Electrically, the Paddleboard is extremely simple. It has 12 connectors: 4 64-pin (one is a mechanical connection only), and 8 (6) 34-pin. 24 pins (16 for Tier 3) of each 34-pin connector are mapped to the 64-pin connectors. A keyin netlist describes this fully, and is included at the end of this file. MECHANICAL ---------- The more complex part of designing the paddleboard is clearly the mechanical design. Each paddleboard will be supporting 8 connectors and some portion of the cable weight of each cable. They should not stress the backplane connectors at all, so they must be self-supporting. The current thought is two-fold. First, there are 4, 6-32 holes drilled in two corners of the paddleboard. Additionally, we will use the foil protectors to support the paddleboards, like this: | | FOIL PROTECTOR BACK DOOR --> ++++++ .--. ---------------------------- | ++++ PADDLEBOARD .--. | <-- FRONT DOOR | This requires a set of fancy foil protectors, but they are manufacturable, especially since they need not do the entire job of supporting the system. Another thought is for the paddleboard to have standoffs epoxied to its lower side. They would be approximately 2" x 0.25" x (0.7"-0.0625"), with one on each end, and one in the middle. This scheme has the advantage that the paddleboards are not connected to each other, which is rather nice. Recall that the paddleboards will be loaded with cables. This loading requires that the paddleboards be installed "one-at-a-time," rather than loaded "batchwise." There is not enough room between paddleboards to install cables, hence the paddleboard n+1 can only be installed after paddleboard n has its cables.
