IML-Cable Description

    The IML input  cables for the  trigger framework are  constructed in such a
way so as to  facillitate the  routing of  the cables  between the IMLs and the
Patch panel within the  channels of the racks. Four  pairs of cables, each pair
consisting of two identical cables,  are assembled such that two end connectors
and a third center connector reside on the cable. The following table lists the
proposed distances  between connectors in inches,  and in the number of 18-inch
ribbon cable sections. Also, an  indication of the polarity of the cable (right
or left  handed) is  given. This  feature is  necessary, since  the cables must
either access the cards via the right  or left channel. This is best visualized
by looking  at the cable  from above  as it sits in  the  channel. Cables which
emerge from the left have  their color code start  from the inside, whereas the
cables that emerge from  the right have their color  code begin on the outside.
This insures that  pin 1 will always  coincide with the  right-most pin of each
socket, as seen from the front. The  IML cable connectors follow the convention
of brown, red, orange, yellow, ...etc.  to pins 1,2,3,4,...etc. The patch panel
connector also follows this convention, but due to the fact that it must access
the back of the  panel, one of two  conditions will  exist: Either the order of
the bits  will be  preserved, or the  polarity of  the bits will  be preserved,
depending on how the connection is made.
