********************************************************* * * * D0 FIRST LEVEL TRIGGER SYSTEM BUS BUFFER CARD * * * ********************************************************* Michigan State University - 20-NOV-1989 Rev. 24-OCT-1994 SG Rev. 2-JUN-1995 SG (power use) The First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus and the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus run on two 32 pair twisted flat cables from the First Level Trigger Control Computer and through the Bus Buffer Card of each rack of the First Level Trigger System. All the bits of both busses are ECL differential signals. In every rack, both busses are buffered by the Bus Buffer Board and distributed to every Mother-Board Driver Card in the rack. The drivers outputs are pulled down by 56 Ohm resistors connected to VTT ( -2.0 V ). Every pair of resistors also matches the characteristic 110 Ohm impedance of the differential line. The Bus Buffer Card is plugged into the backplane by two 140 pin DIP connectors. The Bus Buffer Card uses the connectors as follows : o The upper half of J1 ( pin#75-138 ) receives the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus that is generated by the MTG card via a 32 pair twisted flat cable. o The lower half of J1 ( pin#3-66 ) transmits the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus to every Mother-Board Driver card associated with this Bus Buffer Board via a 32 pair twisted flat cable. o The upper half of J2 ( pin#75-138 ) receives the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus from the COMINT card via a 32 pair twisted flat cable. Note that the 8 bi-directional Data bits can also be transmitted to the COMINT card on this cable. o The lower half of J2 ( pin#3-66 ) transmits the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus to every Mother-Board Driver card associated with this Bus Buffer Board via a 32 pair twisted flat cable. Note that the 8 bi-directional Data bits can also be received from the Mother-Board Driver Cards on this cable. o The power ( -5.2 V ) and ground are also brought on the card through the J1 and J2 connectors. The First Level Trigger Bus Buffer Card drains 6 Amperes. Each Bus Buffer Board will have its own unique address, consisting of the upper 5 bits of the Mother Board Address. Every Mother Board Driver attached to a Bus Buffer Board must have the same upper 5 address bits. ------------------------------------------------- | 7 | 6 | 5 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | | MSB | | | | | | | LSB | ------------------------------------------------- \_____________ _____________/ \_______ _______/ V V | | The most significant 5 bits | will provide the Bus Buffer | Address. | | The least significant 3 bits will provide the Mother Board Address NOTE: the upper 5 bits will still be passed to the MBD, and the MBD will still decode the entire 8 bit address. All MBD's driven by a single BBB will have the same upper 5 address bits. By this means, the Bus Buffer Board will "wake up" when any of its associated MBD's is addressed. The BBB passes the Timing and Synchronization Signal Bus to the MBD's whether or not the BBB is being addressed. The BBB passes the Mother Board Address, Card Address, Function Address, Direction, and Strobe lines to the MBD's whether or not the BBB is being addressed. (Note: the original specification for the BBB indicated that it would only pass these signals to the MBD's when the BBB was being addressed, and would force all of these signals to a differential LOW [except for Direction, which it was to have forced HIGH] when the BBB was not being addressed. The BBB as implemented passes these signals all of the time as described above). The BBB passes the Data to the MBD's only when the BBB is addressed and the Direction line is low (i.e. the COMINT is writing to the MBD's). In addition, the Data lines to the COMINT (which pass data read from an application card) are driven ONLY when the BBB is addressed, and the Direction line indicates a read operation. They are driven low otherwise, allowing other BBB's on the bus to drive data if necessary. Thus when more than one BBB is attached to the COMINT, only the desired BBB provides data to the COMINT. Every differential signal is displayed on the edge of the board by a pair of red light emiting diodes for a visual checking of the electrical state of every bit of each bus. One LED of the pair lights is the signal is differentially high, the other LED lights if the signal is differentially low. Thus the state of the signal is always indicated by the presence (rather than the absence) of a lit LED.
