D0 FIRST LEVEL TRIGGER SYSTEM INTERMEDIATE LATCH CARD ! ! ! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Michigan State University - 2-Jun-1987 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Intermediate Latch (IML) Card is used in the Trigger Framework. These cards receive and latch experiment triggers (level zero triggers, calorimeter triggers etc). The latched experiment triggers are then used to drive an Intermediate Latch backplane where ANDOR cards combine the experiment triggers into specific triggers. The IML card is also a computer addressable 128 bit latch. The 128 computer generated bits can be used as simulated data for testing the portions of the Trigger Framework that follow the IML card. One IML card occupies the third third slot from the bottom in each of the Intermediate Latch backplanes in the Trigger Framework racks. The IML card receives the experiment triggers through carried on four 64 conductor twist and flat ribbon cables. The IML card also receives the computer bus from a 64 conductor flat ribbon cable on the front panel. The latched signals are driven out as 128 differential ECL signals on the two 140 pin connectors to the Intermediate Latch backplane. There are seven connectors on the IML card. Four of these bring the experiment triggers into the front of the card, two Drive the latched signals onto the backplane, and one carries the computer bus into the front of the card. The only supply used is -5.2 volts @ ~ 12 amps. Note: The -5.2 volt supply is carried on J1 pins 69-72 and J2 pins 69-72. This is different from standard Trigger framework cards. The IML card MUST NEVER be plugged into any slot but the blue color coded IML slot and other trigger framework cards MUST NEVER be inserted into the IML slot. PROGRAMMING The IML card contains 16 read write registers located at function address 0 through 15. These registers contain random data at power on and must be initialized if used. The purpose of these registers is to provide simulated data to the Intermediate Latch backplane for checkout of the trigger framework. The register location vrs Intermediate Latch backplane bit addressed is given below. The data bus bits map onto the Intermediate Latch backplane in reverse order. For example for function address 2 data bit 1 maps to backplane bit 24 and data bit 8 maps to backplane bit 17. There is one 8 switch DIP switch used to set the card address. Bits one through six of this switch are used to select the card address as shown in the table below. Bits seven and eight are unused. Note for these switches when closed or in the on position represent a logical 1. These LEDs are in two differential pairs and are used to display the state of the two timing signals on the card. LED's DS1 and DS2 display the state of the CLOCK signal. LED's DS3 and DS4 display the state of the DATA SELECT line. The DATA SELECT line is driven from timing signal F. When The DATA SELECT line is low the real experiment triggers are used. When the DATA SELECT line is high the computer simulated data is used. The CLOCK line is driven by timing signal G. When held low the backplane is driven by the data selected by the DATA SELECT line. This data is latched on the rising edge of the CLOCK signal and remains latched only as long as the CLOCK line is held high. Description of the problem encountered with the IML card will precede the modification description. Problems with the IML card were discovered, when trying to write data into the function addresses and then read the data placed at a function address. Upon further testing of the card, it was determined that function addresses 9 and 12, 11 and 14 had switched places in the write mode. At this point it was suspected to be a hardware problem and inspecting the schematic diagrams of the IML card confirmed it. The diagram of the read and write strobes to the simulated data latches to be specific. The problem lied in the area of logic to U150 for addressing the proper function address. Pins 7 and 14 at U150 are crossed, a logic analysis will reconfirm that indeed this is the problem. This concludes the problem description of the IML card. The modifications performed to the IML cards are detailed in the steps shown below. 1. Remove the trace from U150 pin 7, on the component side, to the plate through. 2. Remove only about one half of an inch of the trace from U150 pin 14. Do not remove the portion where it starts to go underneath U150. This is also done on the component side. 3. Solder in a white lead from U150 pin 7 to U149 pin 7, on the solder side. 4. Solder in a white lead from U150 pin 14 to U149 pin 14, on the solder side. 5. Epoxy all white leads to bare spots on the solder side of the IML cards. 6. Testing the IML cards again to write and read data at function addresses proves to be successful. This concludes the description of the problem and modification performed to the IML cards.
