D0 FIRST LEVEL TRIGGER SYSTEM MOTHER-BOARD DRIVER CARD Michigan State University - December-1985 Rev. 5-JUN-1995 In each rack of the First Level Trigger System the Bus Buffer Card distributes the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus and the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus via two 32 pair twisted flat cables to every Mother-Board Driver Card in the rack. On each mother-board, the Mother-Board Driver Card distributes the Specific Mother-Board Bus to every card plugged into the mother-board via either the backplane or a 32 pair twisted flat cable running in front of the crate. All bits of each bus are ECL differential signals. The drivers outputs are pulled down by 56 Ohm resistors connected to VTT ( -2.0 V ). Every pair of resistors also matches the caracteristic 110 Ohm impedance of the differential line. The Mother-Board Driver Card is plugged into the backplane by two 140 pin DIP connectors. The Mother-Board Driver Card uses the connectors as follows : - The lower half of J1 ( pin#3-66 ) is connected to the cable distributing the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus inside the rack. - The upper half of J1 ( pin#75-138 ) and J5 provide two different ways to distribute the Specific Mother-Board Bus to every card plugged into the mother-board. When the backplane does not support the bus, then a 32 pair twisted flat cable is connected to J5 and to the other boards in a daisy chain in front of the crate. - The lower half of J1 ( pin#3-66 ) is connected to the cable distributing the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus inside the rack. - The upper half of J2 ( pin#75-138 ) is not used on the Mother-Board Driver Card. - The power ( -5.2 V ) and ground are also brought to the card through the J1 and J2 connectors. The First Level Trigger Mother-Board Driver Card drains 3 amperes. The 32 differential signals composing the Specific Mother-Board Bus distributed to the cards plugged into a given mother-board are : - The Card Address. - The Function Address. - The Bidirectional Data. - The Strobe bit. - The Direction bit. - The 8 signals selected from the First Level Trigger Timing and Synchronization Bus . J3 and J4 are respectively a set of 64 and 16 wire wrapping pins. The 8 Timing and Synchronization Signals to be distributed on the mother-board are selected by connecting 16 wires between the pins of J4 and some of the pins of J3. On both sets of pins, the inverted signal of every differential bit is located on the row closer to the backplane. On J3 the Timing and Synchronization number 1 is located on the two pins closer to the edge of the board. On J4 the Timing and Synchronization number H is located on the two pins closer to the edge of the board. The Mother-Board Address present on the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus is decoded on the Mother-Board Driver Card. The address of the mother-board is selected on an 8 bit switch located on the Mother-Board Driver Card. The least significant bit (LSB) is the closer one to the backplane. An open switch sets a bit to one, a closed switch sets a bit to zero. When the Mother-Board Address present on the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus does not match the 8-bit word dialed on the Mother-Board Driver Card, both Backplane and Front Cable Specific Mother-Board Bus stay in the defined state : - Card Address 0. - Function Address 0. - Data 0. - Strobe bit in low, inactive state. - Direction bit in high, read state. The 8 Timing and Synchronization Signals selected on a given Mother-Board Driver Card are always transmited to the mother-board. Even when the mother-board is not selected on the First Level Trigger Control Computer Bus.
