The contents of the 32 scalers can be read by the computer by a simple sequence of CBUS cycles. Each SBSC Scaler has both a Count Register where its current total count is incremented and stored, and an Output Register where the value from the Count Register can be stored in preparation for read-out. In preparation for read-out the value from the Count Registered is stored in the Output Register and then the Output Register is read via the CBUS one byte at a time. Thus 4 CBUS read cycles are required for each scaler, or 128 read cycles for all 32 scalers. The selection of which byte from which scaler will supply data to the CBUS for any given read cycle is controlled by the Scan Counter. The Scan Counter is reset, to select the LSB of scaler number 1, with the same instruction that transfers data from the Count Registers to the Output Registers. Note that these Individual Gate Inputs on the SBSC card are LOW by default when nothing is connected to them, thus enabling the SBSC to increment when nothing is connected to control the Individaul Gate Inputs. The connection between the FSTD and the SBSC is made with one 32 signal jumper cable.
