Chairperson Policy #4

Leave Savings and Unspent Faculty Salaries

Discussed by ADCOM: 1/9/96

Revised: 2/20/96

It has been PA tradition to split salary savings which accrue to the department with the interest group. Generally, this is referred to as the "half of the half" rule, when applied to full-year sabbatical leaves. I intend to continue this tradition, except for specially negotiated circumstances. These special situations must involved a written agreement between the Chairperson and the interest group Executive Secretary.

The chairperson split is with the interest group as a whole. I recognize that each interest group, in turn, distributes these resources differently from within. However, I encourage groups to give back these salary savings to the person or group responsible for generating them.

These situations are likely to be one of the following three:

  1. Full-time sabbatical leave. Here, an outside institution provides half of the faculty academic salary and PA then receives the unspent half. I will give "half of that half" back to the group and retain "half of the half" within the Department budget.
  2. Leave with outside support. In this case, the entire faculty salary is retained by PA and I will distribute half of it back to the group, and retain half as in 1.. Such a leave is a negotiation. (See Chairperson Policy #8)
  3. Unfilled faculty position. This circumstance will be treated as in 2..
