First, you have to make sure that you have Java installed on your system. Since all but very recent versions
of the Java package have known security problems, it would be a good idea to go to http://www.java.com/
and download and install the latest version, just in case.
Now, download the file minerva2013.zip
according to the instructions provided by Dr. Brock.
Using Windows Explorer, navigate to where your browser put the downloaded
minerva2013.zip
file. Right-click on the file name and select
"Extract All..." from the drop-down menu.
The sequence is slightly different at this point between versions of Windows, so we'll show the procedure separately for Windows XP and Windows Vista & 7. (Windows 8 should resemble the Windows Vista & 7 sequence, but we haven't double-checked this.)
The Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard window should pop up. Select "Next>".
The Select a Destination window is next. Type in a destination. The default will be in the same downloads directory that the
minerva.zip file was put in by the browser. You probably don't want it there. Similarly, you probably don't want it in the
C:\Windows
or C:\Program Files
areas, because Windows reserves those directory trees for particular
purposes (Windows XP doesn't really enforce the reservations, but newer versions of Windows do).
So, either put it in its own top-level directory
(C:\minerva2013
) or as a subdirectory of some other top-level directory, which may or may not already exist.
The example shows the user choosing to put it in C:\YYYY\minerva2013
. It is not uncommon for people to
create a top-level directory called C:\PortableApps
for the purpose of locating programs which are installed
simply by copying files, instead of by running an installation program, so C:\PortableApps\minerva2013
might
be a good choice.
The Extraction Complete window should now appear.
Check the "Show extracted files" checkbox and select the "Finish" button
At the end of this, you will be shown a Windows Explorer window displaying the contents of the zipped file.
After selecting "Extract All..." in Windows Vista or Windows 7, you are taken straight to the Select a Destination and Extract Files
pop-up window. Type in a destination. The default will be in the same downloads directory that the
minerva.zip file was put in by the browser. You probably don't want it there. You also don't want it in the
C:\Windows
or C:\Program Files
or C:\Program Files (x86)
areas,
because Windows Vista and Windows 7 reserve those directory trees for particular purposes and enforces these
restrictions (Windows 7 more strictly than Windows Vista).
You will then see a small pop-up window list the status of the extraction process.
At the end of this, you will be shown a Windows Explorer window displaying the contents of the zipped file.
For this part, the steps are identical between Windows XP, Windows Vista & Windows 7. The examples show the Windows XP windows; the Windows Vista and Windows 7 windows may look a bit different, but the basic content is the same and the procedure to follow is the same between the two.
Right-click on the
atlantis.jar
file name and select "Create Shortcut" from the drop-down menu.
This will create a shortcut called "Shortcut to atlantis.jar".
Rename this to something else (or not). In the
example, it has been renamed "Atlantis Program". To double-check the shortcut, right-click on it and select
"Properties" from the drop-down menu.
If it has been created properly, the shortcut properties should look like:
---- Target type: Executable Jar File Target location: ZZZZ Target: X:\YYYY\ZZZZ\atlantis.jar Start in: X:\YYYY\ZZZZ Shortcut key: None Run: Normal window ----This shortcut starts up the software and uses its default data set, and you can use the menus within the program to go and load a different data set for your analysis.
Now, just move the shortcut to your desktop or other convenient location.
