RR Lyrae in the Globular Cluster NGC 6304

NGC 6304

NGC 6304 is a metal rich, it contains a high abundance of elements heavier than helium, globular cluster in the Milky Way. It is located near the bulge, the center, of the Milky Way. Due to the way heavy elements affect the evolution of stars, metal rich globular clusters in general do not contain RR Lyrae variable stars. It has been shown that this is not the whole story. There appear to be more factors than just metallicity that determine whether or not RR Lyrae stars appear in a globular cluster.

NGC 6304 is unusual in that several RR Lyraes have been found in the field around it. My project is to study the RR Lyraes near this cluster and determine whether or not they are members of the cluster. If they are members, this will give us a better of understanding of how RR Lyraes and globular clusters evolve.
