Disco-Kraken Assembly Description ------------------------------------ Draft - NOT Good for Production Rev. 4-Sept-2024 The Disco-Kraken circuit board is rectangular 235 mm on a side with an additional 34 mm "bump out" on its lower edge. The detailed dimensions of the DK board are shown in the first of the three gerber files that are provided on the web with the rest of the technical data for the RFP. There are about 1259 SMD and 17 Through-Hole components to be mounted on each DK circuit board by the assembly company. We are obtaining these bids based on a design that is about 50% complete. No major changes are planned to the design data presented here but the number of SMD by-pass capacitor placements could increase by as much as 50 parts when the design is completed. We are also requesting that the assembly vendor takes care of obtaining the bare pcb cards. Quantity and Schedule: This build is for 40 fully assembled DK circuit boards. We do plan future builds of approximately 1000 DK circuit boards but no specific or guaranteed plans are available at this time. The final design data that is good for production should be available in mid October. With a purchase order in place then from release of the final design data we would expect a 4 to 6 week turn around to build these boards. DK Bare Circuit Board: We are requesting that the assembly vendor procure the bare circuit boards. We are doing this so that the assembly vendor can be confident of the quality of the bare cards and to insure that the bare cards have the required rails and other features to fit with their assembly process. We encourage and are willing to pay for the assembly vendor to obtain high quality bare cards with the required surface treatment to insure an optimum SMD solder re-flow assembly. We assume that this will be a gold finish. We are happy to be involved in discussions with the bare board vendor to verify that the bare DK pcb will match our understanding of the requirements. We need to approve the stack up that will be used in the DK bare pcb. A full description of the DK pcb is given in a separate document in the DK Card manufacturing for bids only web directory. Please see the file: dk_aaa_bare_pcb_description.txt We assume that the assembly house will be purchasing about 42 bare DK PCBs: 40 to build on, 1 for a Thermal Profile study, and we request to have 1 bare board sent to us for our study before the assembly house begins their actual assembly process. Versions of the DK Card: There is only one version of the DK card. All 40 DK cards are to be built in the same way. DK Card Components: The bulk of the components used on the DK card are surface mount devices (SMD). A small number of through hole devices (THD) are also used. All of the THD components are either connectors, large capacitors, or power supply modules. All of the components (both SMD and THD) that are used by the assembly vendor to build the DK circuit boards are included in the following 2 files: dk_bill_of_materials_assembly.txt dk_component_descriptions_assembly.txt SMD Components: In total 1259 SMD components are placed on each DK card. On the top side of the card there are 625 SMD components of 90 different component types. On the bottom side of the card there are 634 SMD components of 53 different component types. Files in this "for bids only" data release related to the DK card's SMD components are: dk_smd_component_counts_top.txt dk_smd_component_counts_bottom.txt dk_smd_xy_data_top.txt dk_smd_xy_data_bottom.txt Through Hole Components: Each DK card has a total of 17 THD components. These THD components are all of Solder-In type (no Press-In type components are used in this design). Details about the THD components used on the DK card are given in the file: dk_thd_components.txt Not Installed Components: There are about 25 pad locations on the DK Card that include silkscreen reference designators where the assembly vendor will not be placing components during the DK card build. All of the Not Installed components are listed in the file: dk_not_installed_components.txt Polarized Two Terminal Components: A number of polarized two terminal SMD components are used in the DK design and are listed in the following file: dk_polarized_two_terminal_components.txt Kit Build: This is a kit build. We will provide all of the SMD components on tape and reel or in trays. We understand that there could be a charge for any components that are not provided in appropriate packaging for automatic assembly machines. A full inventory of the kit will be provided. RoHS: I assume that it will be a no-lead build. I believe that all of the components have a no-lead finish. Testing: We do not expect the assembly vendor to do any testing of these cards. We expect only the normal assembly, inspection, and cleaning of these cards. First Article: We do not require a "first article" card for this build but we are prepared to immediately examine a first article card if the assembly vendor prefers to make one. We could examine a first article card either at MSU or at the assembly vendor's location. Assembly Data: The "for bid only" assembly data files for the DK Cards are available in the web directory: https://web.pa.msu.edu/people/nathanw/discokraken/manufacturing/1_draft_for_bid_only/ All assembly data is in mm and the files have dates in September 2024. Please let me know if you need any other technical data about the DK card.
