MSU Built Cables for the H-Clk and CB-Fan Cards ------------------------------------------------- Orig Ver. 9-MAY-2012 Current Ver. 30-MAY-2012 The purpose of this file is to list the various specialized cables that are needed as part of the H-Clk and CB-Fan card system for their Timestamp and Control functions in the HAWC experiment. This file is divided into a number of sections: - The first part of this file just functionally describes each type of specialized cable that is needed in the H-Clk CB-Fan card system. - The second section describes in detail each of these cables, e.g. what connectors and other parts are needed to make each of these cables, list of what signals are being connected, ... - The third part of this file is an overall parts list of the items that will be needed to make the full set of specialized cables for all of the H-Clk CB-Fan installations. Types of Specialized Cables - Functional Description: ----------------------------------------------------- 1. Mez-456 Access Connector to H-Clk Access Connector A cable to connect the Access connector on the H-Clk card to the Access connector on the MEZ-456 card. This cable is needed if for example you want the upper recessed push-button on H-Clk card to cause Configuration of the FPGA on the MEZ-456 card. If you do not want any of the special features that are available on the Access connector then this cable is not needed. The Access connector cables are also used when one want to send the 40 MHz Clock and the 1 PPS signal from one H-Clk card to another. Some of the many Access connector cable setups are described in the file: /H-Clk/Text/h_clk_mez_456_access_conn_cables.txt Components: Connector Housing 40 position with key: FCI No 90311-040LF Contacts FCI No 77138-001LF 2. Control Signals from Control H-Clk to CB-Fan(s) A 4-way octopus cable to connect a 34 pin 16 output signal GPIO connector on the Control H-Clk card to, up to, 4 CB-Fan cards via their 10 pin 4 or 5 signal J6 control signal connector. The control signals that are received by J6 on the CB-Fan cards are: CRST, TRG, CLR, LNE - Read_Now, and the separate Read_Now signals. This is the upper "Control Signals" cable that is shown in the block diagrams of the "Small System" and "Maximum System". Status Signals from CB-Fan(s) to the Control H-Clk A 4-way octopus cable to connect up to 4 CB-Fan cards from their 10 pin J7 status signal connector to a 34 pin 16 input signal GPIO connector on the Control H-Clk card. These status signal lines carry a combination of Scaler System Almost_Full_1_2 and General_Purpose_Input signals to the Control H-Clk card. This is the lower "Status Signals" cable that is shown in the block diagrams of the "Small System" and "Maximum System". Note that the construction of this cable is the same as the above cable in item #2. 4. CB-Fan ECL Control Buses to CAEN TDCs A 3-way octopus cable to run from the CB-Fan card's J3 and J4 ECL Control Bus connectors to the CAEN TDC front panel Control Bus connector. Both J3 and J4 on the CB-Fan card have 3 Control Buses each. This 3-way cable splits these into individual runs to individual CAEN TDCs. GPS Receiver to Clock H-Clk Card A special cable to run from the "Bulgin" connector on the GPS receives to the 16 pin connector on the front-panel of the H-Clk cards. It *may* be best to make up this over all cable as a pair of cables: - a relatively short (10 ft or something) special flat cable connector to "Bulgin" connector adaptor cable and - an extension type cable, i.e. one end is a M flat cable connector and the other end is a F flat cable connector. This extension cable is just a normal IDC press together assembly and can be made the correct length to fit a given application. /H-Clk/Text/gps_receiver_to_h_clk_cable.txt Components: Cable mount connector 16 pin F 3M No 89116-0101 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-89116 Cable mount connector 16 pin M 3M No 4616-6001 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-4616 !! metal Cable 16 conductor twist-flat 3M No 1700/16 100SF Housing: Bulgin Part No. PX0410/10P/6065 6.0 to 6.5 mm cable entry Contacts: Bulgin Part No. SA3180/1 packet of 10 solder contacts Tool: Bulgin Part No. 13027 insert/extract tool Additional Specialized Cables: ------------------------------ The following is a list of some additional specialized cables. At this time we either don't know whether we will actually need some of these cables or we don't yet know enough to fully specify these cables. The following is what is either known or assumed at this time. 6. Special CB-Fan ECL Control Bus to Scaler System The CB-Fan card connector J8 is a special ECL Control Bus for the Scaler System. At least at the CB-Fan end this cable is a normal 16 conductor twist and flat cable with a standard female IDC connector. Components: Cable mount connector 16 pin F 3M No 89116-0101 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-89116 Cable 16 conductor twist-flat 3M No 1700/16 100SF 7. CB-Fan to SBCs cable SBCs_Read_Now and SBC_n_Busy signals This cable connects the CB-Fan J11 connector to, up to, 8 SBCs. At the CB-Fan end the connector is a standard 34 pin header and the signals are arranged in pairs, i.e. first a SBC_Read_Now signal and then a SBC_n_Busy signal. At this time I do not know what kind of connector is needed at the SBC end. This is an octopus type cable. Components: Cable mount connector 34 pin F 3M No 89134-0101 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-89134 Cable 34 conductor twist-flat 3M No 1700/34 100SF 8. CB-Fan General Purpose Input Connectors Depending on how it is setup a CB-Fan card can receive up to 4 General Purpose input signals one of which may be the Load_Next_Event_Enable signal. At this time it is not understood how the cable for these signals needs to be setup at the far end. At the CB-Fan end the cable for these signals plugs into a standard 10 pin header. Components: Cable mount connector 10 pin F 3M No 89110-0101 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-89110 Cable 34 conductor twist-flat 3M No 1700/10 100SF Additional Standard Cables: --------------------------- The following is a list of the additional cables that are needed to make a complete system. These cables are either standard twist and flat cables with a standard female IDC connectors at each end or they are some other type of cable that is standard to the HAWC experiment. 9. CB-Fan LVDS Control Bus to e.g. HAWC Trigger System The CB-Fan provides 2 LVDS Control Bus connections, one on connector J1 and one on connector J2. J1 and J2 are standard 16 pin headers. This cable is a normal 16 conductor twist and flat cable with a standard female IDC connector at each end. CB-Fan J5 Status Signals to Control H-Clk GPIO Input Port CB-Fan connector J5 provides the Almost_Full_1 signals from the 8 normal Control Buses and either the 8 Almost_Full_2 signals or else the 8 SBC_n_Busy signals. These signals flow from the CB-Fan J5 connector to the Control H-Clk cards GPIO Input connector. This cable is a normal 34 conductor twist and flat cable with a standard female IDC connector at each end. Components: Cable mount connector 34 pin F 3M No 89134-0101 Strain Relief for the above 3M No 3448-89134 Cable 34 conductor twist-flat 3M No 1700/34 100SF 11. CB-Fan LVDS <--> ECL Converter to/from Commercial NIM Module and to/from Control H-Clk Card The cables to connect signals to/from the LVDS <--> ECL Converter on each CB-Fan are are normal 34 conductor twist and flat cable with standard connectors. The LVDS <--> ECL Converter is connectors J9 and J10 on the CB-Fan card.
