Design of the Front-Panel for the H-Clk Card -------------------------------------------------- Original Rev. 16-Feb-2012 Current Rev. 17-FEB-2012 In standard VME card orientation (i.e. front panel side to the left, backplane connector side to the right, component side up, top top, bottom bottom) the bottom left hand corner is the 0,0 of the coordinate system. All dimensions are in mm and are given as X,Y pairs. Some of these dimensions are "irrational" because the Euro-Card physical format of VME cards is a mixed English Metric specification. X,Y locations of component pins and some mounting holes along the front panel edge of the H-Clk card. The 16 pin and 34 pin connectors are English dimensioned components with their center at a rational metric location ---> none of their pins are at rational locations. The location of the Upper and Lower Rows of 34 pin connectors is provided for reference, e.g. so you know where in the vertical dimension these cables will come through the front panel. ======================================================================== Front Panels for the H-Clk and CB-Fan cards for HAWC The H-Clk and CB-Fan cards are both 6U x 160mm VME size cards. The custom front panels for these cards will be made from commercial VME front panel kits. There are 3 general projects in this overall front panel work. They are: - Make 2 proto-type front panels for the H-Clk cards. These will be made from some spare single width panel kits that I have on hand. The intent is to provide something that will let us get 2 H-Clk cards in and out of a crate for early testing. This work is also a chance to learn about VME front panels. There will be no lettering or anodizing of these proto-type panels. Mistakes on these proto-type panels, e.g. extra holes, do not matter. - Design and make 20 of the real H-Clk front panels. - Design and make 15 of the real CB-Fan front panels. Note that the real H-Clk and CB-Fan front panels are double width to allow space for all of the cables that need to land on these cards. The machine work for these panels is likely to include: - round holes for LEDs and pushbuttons to look through - a slot for the GPS connector - a slot or notch for cables to enter the module - a custom board mounting bracket - a custom cable clamp bracket set The following list is a sketch of the individual tasks involved in providing the real front panels for the H-Clk and CB-Fan cards for the HAWC experiment. 1. Make a detailed mechanical design and set of drawings: Board mounting LED holes GPS Receiver Connector hole Mounting brackets Cable Cut out Cable Clamps 2. Machine the panels and make any required brackets Machining includes drilling holes and slot cutting work on on the mill. Brackets are likely to require cutting bar stock, drilling and tapping. 3. Paint the panels or have them anodized 4. Design the labelling and the artwork for the panels 5. Have the labelling / artwork silkscreened onto the panels. Status and Schedule: as of 15-Feb-12 - I have some number of old spare single width kits that can be used for the 2 proto-type H-Clk panels and for other necessary experimenting - I have 32 real double with kits for the H-Clk & CB-Fan work. - Detailed drawings of the H-Clk pcb is available and we expect the actual assembled H-Clk cards in about a week. - The CB-Fan pcb is still being designed. - Would like the 2 proto-type H-Clk panels in about 1 week. - Would like the 20 real H-Clk panels in about 5 weeks. - Would like the 12 real CB-Fan panels in about 4 weeks after the pcb design is released (which will happen about 1 month from now).
