Ion Mill ID-2500 Backplane Power Connections -------------------------------------------------- Initial Rev. 25-Aug-2021 Current Rev. 26-Aug-2021 This file lists just the power connections provided to the 5 power modules by the backplane, i.e. it covers just the J2 and J3 connectors on the power modules. The backplane makes the same 150 Volt bulk DC power connection to each of the power modules. Note that this bulk 150 V DC power is not isolated from the line. This is just full wave bridge rectified raw line power as shown in the file: id_2500_support_brds_sch_0002.png On the power modules their middle J2 connector receives this bulk 150 V DC power. J2 is a 7 pin connector. J2 Pin Number Function ------ ---------------------------- 1 150 V Power Return 2 150 V Power Return 3 No Connection 4 No Connection 5 No Connection 6 +150 V DC Bulk Power 7 +150 V DC Bulk Power J3 is the 18 pin connector at the right-hand bottom side of the power modules when looking at the top side of the power module. On all power module, J3 is the power Output connector and carries no other signals. J3 Pin Number Function ------ ----------------------------------------------- 1 Pins 1:4 are tied in parallel. On Cathode and 2 Neutralizer they are one side of the AC output. 3 On Discharge and Beam they are the positive 4 output. On Accelerator they are the negative output. 5 No Connection 6 No Connection 7 No Connection 8 No Connection 9 9 & 10 are used only on Cathode and Neutralizer 10 power modules. These pins are the center tap of the secondary of their output transformer. 11 No Connection 12 No Connection 13 No Connection 14 No Connection 15 Pins 15:18 are tied in parallel. On Cathode and 16 Neutralizer they are one side of the AC output. 17 On Discharge and Beam they are the negative 18 output. On Accelerator they are the positive output. Backplane wiring from the power module outputs to the ID-2500 rear panel output terminal strip. Output Terminal Strip Lugs 3, 7, 9 are not used in our Ion Gun setups and I believe that these output terminals make no connection to Backplane circuit board traces. Output Terminal Strip Lugs 8 & 10 must be jumpered together when the power output cable is connected to the power supply. That is, both Output Terminals 8 & 10 are carried by a red wire in our output cable, through pin C in the Amphenol connector and to the Anode connection to the Ion Gun.
