DAQ-962 Readout Signal Path ---------------------------------- Original Rev. 29-JUNE-2007 Current Rev. 10-SEPT-2008 The intent of this document is to provide a detailed description of the readout signal path from the T962 Wire Planes through to the T962 DAQ System readout from the ADF-2 cards. The T962 Wire Numbers, T962 DAQ System Channel Numbers, and Connector/Cable Pin Numbers are provided for all steps along this signal path. References to more detailed descriptions of the various components along the T962 signal path are provided where they are available. The basic steps in the T962 Readout Signal Path are the following: - TPC Wire Frame 2 frames of 240 wires each - Bias Voltage Distribution Cards (BVDC) 20 cards of 24 channels each - Internal Readout Cables 20 cables of 50 conductors each These are 10 cable assemblies, each assembly is: 1 100 pin connector, 2 50 conductor cables, and 2 50 pin connectors. - Readout Signal Feedthrough 10 connectors of 100 pins each Walter's design using 3M Pak 50 series connectors - External Readout Cables 10 cable assemblies of: 1 100 pin connector, 2 50 conductor cables, and 3 34 pin connectors. - Preamp-Filter Cards (PFC-16) 30 cards of 16 channels each - Pleated Foil Cables 30 cables carrying 16 channels each - ADF-2 cards (the ADC, circular buffer, and VME readout) 15 cards of 32 channels each Bias Voltage Distribution Card ------------------------------ Each BVDC card services 24 TPC Wires. There are separate sets of BVDCs for each Wire Frame. In the direction along a Wire Frame a BVDC is 4.200", i.e. slightly less than the pitch of 24 wires. The BVDC is 5.000" long in the direction perpendicular to the wire plane. Implementing a BVDC that services 24 TPC Wires was picked to maximize the utilization of Walter's new Signal Feedthrough design and to match up with the 16 channel Preamp Filter cards (PFC-16) which fits with the 32 channel ADF-2 cards (ADC, circular buffer, and VME readout). Each BVDC connects to the Wire Frame with two 12 pin connectors. Two connectors are used to limit how much the wire signals on the Wire Frame must be squeezed in as they route to a connector. The centers of these 12 pin connectors are spaced exactly the pitch of 12 of the landing pads for the wires along the top edge of the TPC Wire Frame, i.e. 12 x (4mm / cos 30 deg) = 55.426mm apart. On the Wire Frame each connector is single row of 25 mil square pins spaced 0.1" apart. This type of connector is very common in lots of electronics and I'm sure that the people routing the TPC Wire Frames will be familiar with it. It is easy to obtain these connector pin strips with Gold plated pins to reduce the chance of a bad connection when the TPC is cold. These strips of pins are supported by a plastic insulator which can be removed after they are soldered on to the Wire Frame to reduce the chance of contaminating the Argon. These pins are also available with "heads" (e.g. from Mil Max) which would keep them from pulling out of the TPC Wire Frame or from pulling the Copper off of the G10 material. The receptacle for these pins on the BVDC is an AMP 1-535676-1 connector. This connector receives pins parallel to the card so the BVDC mounts perpendicular to the Wire Frame as required. This connector is Gold plated in the contact area and its housing is glass filled polyester. I believe that glass polyester is thought to be OK wrt contamination. The BVDC card is a simple double sided card. The intent of this is to minimize the chance of via breakage when the BVDC is cooled to LAr temperature. No internal layers implies no chance of breaking a via connection when cold. All TPC signal routing is on one side. The other side is a ground plane. The ground plane side is closest to the HV Field Cage. The intent is that once the TPC signals reach the BVDC they are shielded from any electric field and thus shielded from moving charge. Each BVDC has a 50 pin male header to connect to its readout cable. This is a standard double row of 25 pins type of header header. It is not a 4 wall header (which would be harder to clean after pcb assembly and could trap contaminates). If necessary the insulating spacer material could be removed from this pin strip header once it is soldered onto the BVDC. The only other components on the BVDC are one value of capacitor and two values of resistor. Both resistors are from the same manufacturer's component series. The draft schematic and circuit board layout for the BVDC are available on the web in the directory: www.pa.msu.edu/~edmunds/LArTPC/T962/Bias_Voltage_Distribution_Card/ Internal Readout Cables ----------------------- A 50 mil pitch 50 conductor ribbon cable, i.e. 25 signal-ground pairs, runs from the BVDC to the Signal Feedthrough. It would be best to use a "Twist-and-Flat" cable in this application. See the cabling technical note below. In any case this cable must be made of materials that do not contaminate the LAr. I believe that a polyolefin cable is suitable for this application. On the BVDC end this cable uses a standard 50 pin IDC receptacle to connect to the 50 pin header on the BVDC card. This IDC receptacle should have Gold plating in the contact area and its housing must be made of a material that does not contaminate the LAr. This is a very common type of connector that is made by many manufacturers. At the Signal Feedthrough end this cable uses a 3M part number P50E-100S-EA connector. Each 3M P50E-100S-EA connector allows 2 of the 50 conductor ribbon cables to attach to a single 100 pin connector on the Signal Feedthrough card. This arrangement makes use of 96 out of the 100 pins on each Signal Feedthrough connector (actually 98 out of 100, see the technical note below). Each Signal Feedthrough connector services 2 BVDC cards. A drawing of the Internal Readout Cable is available in the following web director: www.pa.msu.edu/~edmunds/LArTPC/T962/Readout_Cables/ Readout Signal Feedthrough -------------------------- The intent is that the readout path of T962 will use Walter's latest Readout Signal Feedthrough card. I expect that a full description of this feedthrough card will be available on the web soon. This feedthrough uses 3M 100 pin Pak 50 P50E series board-mount plug connectors both inside and outside of the cryostat. These connectors mate with a 3M Pak 50 P50E series wire-mount socket connectors. Each of these wire-mount socket connectors services two 50 conductor 50 mil flat cables. The traces in the feedthrough circuit board are such that adjacent pairs of pins along a given side of its 100 pin plug connectors are routed as ground-signal pairs. The P50E-100S-EA wire-mount sockets which service two 50 conductor ribbon cables each route all conductors from a given ribbon cable to one side of the 100 pin connectors on the feedthrough circuit board. Within the 50 conductor ribbon cables it is the even number conductors that carry the TPC Wire signals. The odd number conductors in the ribbon cables are all grounds. External Readout Signal Cables ------------------------------ The cable that runs from the Signal Feedthrough to the 16 channel Preamp-Filter cards (PFC-16) is a 50 mil pitch 50 conductor ribbon cable. This cable should also be a polyolefin cable because the polyolefin cable appears to have better noise performance than the PVC cable. Again it would be best for this to be a twist and flat type cable. At the Signal Feedthrough end two of these cables use a 3M P50E-100S-EA connector just like on the cold side of the Signal Feedthrough. The connection to the PFC-16 cards is just a little more complicated. Each 50 conductor ribbon cable is split into 2 sections: a 32 conductor 16 pair section and a 16 conductor 8 pair section. - At the PFC-16 end, the 32 conductor section from the first 50 conductor cable goes to a standard 34 pin IDC receptacle that allows these 16 TPC Wire Signals to plug into a PFC-16 card. - The two of 16 conductor sections, i.e. the last 8 TPC Wire Signals from the first 50 conductor cable and the first 8 TPC Wire Signals from the second 50 conductor cable go to a standard 34 conductor IDC receptacle which allows these 16 TPC Wire Signals to plug into the next PFC-16 card. - Finally the 32 conductor section from the second 50 conductor cable goes to a standard 34 pin IDC receptacle that allows the last 16 TPC Wire Signals to plug into a PFC-16 card. With this simple cabling arrangement we can make very efficient use of the BVDCs, the Signal Feedthroughs, and the PFC-16 cards. A drawing of the External Readout Cable is available in the following web director: www.pa.msu.edu/~edmunds/LArTPC/T962/Readout_Cables/ Technical Notes on Readout Cables --------------------------------- I would like to use Twist and Flat cable for both the Internal and the External Readout Cables. Compared with flat ribbon cable, Twist and Flat cable would clearly provide better protection against noise pickup and provide a clean separation of the charge sensitive and non-sensitive sections of the readout path. Plyolefin cable should be used. To obtain the same waveform from all TPC Wires we need the electrical environment of all readout signals to be the same. If you design the cable layout with conductor number 1 being a signal conductor then in the flat sections of the readout cables this signal conductor has no ground wire on one side of it, which makes its environment different from the rest of the signals. Consider the example of an 8 conductor flat cable; where "S" indicates a signal conductor and "G" indicates a ground conductor. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 <--- Conductor Number S G S G S G S G <--- It Carries This cable leads off with conductor #1 carrying a signal but the electrical environment of that signal is different than the environment of the 3 other signals in this cable. Specifically signal #1 has a ground conductor on only one side of it and the other 3 signal conductors have ground conductors on both sides. The easy way to make the electrical environment the same for all signals along the readout path is to use conductor #1 in the ribbon cable as a ground. Then as you move across the width of the ribbon cable there are ground signal pairs. Finally at the far edge of the ribbon you have an "extra" ground conductor. Thus the even number conductors carry the signals (except for conductor #50 which is the "extra" ground) and the odd number conductors are ground. In the T962 readout cabling scheme presented in this document we implement this very naturally by using a 50 conductor cable to carry 24 signals. Note that we really are making use of the 49th conductor in each cable as the far side ground, i.e. there is only one "extra" ground conductor in the 50 conductor cable. Note that for this scheme to work one must be careful to understand how the signals are paired as they go through the Signal Feedthrough circuit board and one must connect the "unused" 49th and 50th conductors from each 50 conductor internal cable to their BVDC card ground and to a PFC-16 card where they are tied to ground. But connecting the "unused" 49th and 50th conductors of the external readout cables to ground on the PFC-16 cards also works out naturally in this cabling scheme because this scheme uses standard 34 pins IDC connectors to connect the readout cables to the PFC-16 cards. The standard size IDC connector is 34 pins (not 32) so there are two "spare" pins available to connect the two "unused" conductors in each 50 conductor external cable to the PFC-16 ground. The 49th and 50th conductors are also tied directly to ground on the BVDC cards. Technical Notes on the BVDC --------------------------- The goals of the BVDC design are: Provide proper signal handling of the low level TPC wire signals: Use one side of the BVDC as a ground plane to provide both a noise shield (i.e. to control the electrical noise environment in the immediate vicinity of the signal traces) and to block the electrical field from the HV Field Cage and thus minimize the amount of drifting charge in the vicinity of the signal traces and readout cables. Use a DC blocking capacitor that has proven not to generate excess noise when under 500 Volts of DC bias. Use a low noise type of resistor for distribution of the Bias Voltage to each TPC Wire. Make the readout path electrical environment for all TPC Wire Signals exactly the same, i.e. the signals from all wires should have the same waveform. Provide a final filter on the Bias Voltage to each Wire Plane where we can guarantee that the ground side of this filter is at the same potential as that which the Preamp measures the Wire Signal against. Provide a direct connection between the Wire Frame and the BVDC, i.e. no intermediate cable is used to connect the Wire Frame and the BVDC. Provide for the possibility of a ground connection to each BVDC from the bottom end of the readout cable shield pipe (if that is needed to control the noise level). Minimize the chance of contamination: Where ever possible use only components that have been successfully used before in earlier LArTPCs or in LAr Calorimeters. Test all components for contamination in the LUKE test setup Develop a method for cleaning assembled BVDC circuit boards, e.g. for cleaning off the soldering flux and other contaminates. Minimize the change that "Revision A" of the BVDC will have an error or that the BVDCs will develop a problem only after the TPC is installed in its cryostat and is cold: There are no internal layers or vias in the BVDC circuit board design (which could cause trouble only when the cards get cold) All connector contacts are Gold plated Use only components that have been tested (and that are easy to test) for electrical operation at LN2 temperature and that have been tested for no contamination of the LAr. Use the fewest possible number of different component types TPC Wire Number to DAQ System Channel Number Signal Path -------------------------------------------------------- Naming and Numbering the Various Objects: The TPC Planes are: The inner Induction plane of 240 wires and the outer Collection plane also of 240 wires Note that there is also a "shield" plane that is closer to the cathode than the induction plane. The shield plane is not readout. The wires in the TPC are numbered: 1:240 in the Induction Plane and 241:480 in the collection Plane. Wire Numbers 1 and 241 are closest to the beam input end of the TPC, i.e. the end of the cryostat with the large flange cover. BVDC Card have typically be refered to by the serial number that is scribed into them and by the letter "I" or "C" for Induction and Collection. On a BVDC Card its Channel (Wire) Number runs 1:24 NOTE: because the TPC was installed in the cryostat in the reverse direction from what had been planned originally, the wire number labels in the silk screen on the BVDC cards are backwards, i.e. silk screen label #1 is actuall the 24th wire serviced by that BVDC card. Internal Readout Cables have typically been numbered by the serial numbers of the BVDC cards that they plug into. Signal Feedthrough Connector Numbers run 1:11 See the ascii layout drawing of the feedthrough card below. PFC-16 Cards are numbered by their slot position in either the Upper or the Lower card file in the Preamp Box. In each card file the slots are numbered 1:15. On a PFC-16 Card its Channel Numbers run 0:15 ADF-2 Cards are numbered by the slot in the VME crate that they are plugged into. Currently only one VME crate is in use. In the future we will move to a 2 crate system. On an ADF-2 its Card Channel Numbers run 0:31 T962 DAQ System Wire Numbers: Wire Number 1 is the Induction Plane wire closest to the beam input end of the detector and Wire Number 240 is the Induction Plane wire furthest from the beam input end of the detector. Wire Number 241 is the Collection Plane wire closest to the beam input end of the detector and Wire Number 480 is the Collection Plane wire furthest from the beam input end of the detector. Tables Showing the Readout Path Connectivity -------------------------------------------- The following tables show the Readout Signal Path for all 480 Wires. Note that the pattern repeats after: the first 4 complete BVDC cards, the first 2 complete Signal Feedthrough connectors, the first 6 complete PFC-16 cards, and the first 3 complete ADF-2 cards. NOTE: These tables have been modified to show the "As Built" connectivity, i.e. with the TPC installed backwards in the cryostat from what had been planned originally and the the BVDC signals running backwards. As Built Cable Numbering in the Readout Chain --------------------------------------------- The BVDC cards were installed as follows on the TPC. The number in the following numbering system is the serial number of the BVDC card. The letter in the following numbering system is "I" for the Induction plane and "C" for the collection plane. The beam direction and the end from which the Bias Voltage is feed are both indicated. Bias Voltage ---> Beam ---> I1 - I2 - I3 - I4 - I5 - I6 - I7 - I8 - I14 - I15 C17 - C18 - C19 - C20 - C21 - C24 - C25 - C26 - C27 - C28 Beam ---> Bias Voltage ---> The Internal Readout Cables are given the same number as the BVDC card that they come from, e.g. "I1" and "C17" are the numbers of two of the cables. Recall how the TPC wires are numbered: Wire Number 1 is the Induction Plane wire closest to the beam input end of the detector and Wire Number 240 is the Induction Plane wire furthest from the beam input end of the detector. Wire Number 241 is the Collection Plane wire closest to the beam input end of the detector and Wire Number 480 is the Collection Plane wire furthest from the beam input end of the detector. Thus in the following table the same chain of BVDC cards is shown with the wires numbers that each card services shown above or below it. The connectors of each cable at its preamp end also have the numbers: 1:16, 17:32, 33:48 to indicate the relative wire number within the cable. The first issue to notice is that there are only 4 cables coming around the left hand side ot the feedthrough card that need to be plugged into preamps while there are 6 cables coming around the right hand side of the feedthrough card that need preamps. Thus some of the cables from the right hand side will need to cross the middle line of the card file. In the virtical direction the ERC come around the side of the Feedthrough Card at right about the middle line between the upper and lower card files. Thus I do not think that the runs to one card file are much longer than the runs to the other card file. Try a preamp card layout that makes adjacent preamps cards match the TPC wire layout as much as possible without violating known ERC constraints. Note that this alternates cables from each side going to the upper and lower preamp card files. 192:145 144:97 96:49 48:1 288:241 240:193 480:433 432:385 384:337 336:289 Numbering the slots in the Preamp Card File 1:16 (starting from the lefthand side) the following two tables show the layout of the PFC-16 cards.
