M21 Work ReStart Summer 2019 ------------------------------- Initial Rev. Jully-2019 Current Rev. 21-Sept-2019 July 2019: StepUp Controller and Switch: LTC 3787 TK8P2A06PL Verified Sprocket Tooth Counts: Engine Sprocket 20 t - Clutch Chain Wheel 43 t -\ Ratio 2.1500 Transmission Output 19 t - Rear Wheel Sprocket 42 t -\ Ratio 2.2105 So in 4th gear this is an overall ratio of: 4.7526 Both front and rear wheels are 3.25" x 19" K70 (Dunlops I think) on what are probably Jones WM2 rims. The measured circumference of the rear wheel is about 82.5" I do not know what the actual rolling circumference is but for now call this 82". This gives about 773 turns per mile. mph 773 turn/mile x 4.7526 x ----- = Engine RPM per mph 60 in straight through 4th gear ---> 61.23 Engine RPM per mph in top gear Verified Tooth Counts: Magneto Gear Driving Dynamo 58 t - Driven Gear on the Dynamo 22 t -\ Ratio 2.6364 Magneto runs at 1/2 of the Engine RPM so the Dynamo runs at 1.3182 x Engine RPM. Survey While Packing Up to Move Out of Lab C: ---------------------------------------------- - Survey of M21 parts done while organizing and packing up indicates that the following are missing: DriveSide Outer Shim 66-661 or 66-0661 I think that this motor may not have had one of these installed Rod Small End Bushing 66-491 or 66-0491 Crush Drive Spacer 65-2540 Shim 66-1707 or 66-1708 Inlet Tappet 66-1493 I have an inlet tappet but its foot is in bad shape. Depending on the shape of the cams then also an exhaust tappet ? Gasket Set - if I have one where is it ? Screws to hold on the timing cover - I think that my update for these is 1 1/4" 1/4-20 aller head but where are they ? What other places have I randomly left parts in ? - A number of parts need a final polish before engine re-assembly could start: Cam followers (tappets) foot and shank Shafts for the Cams and Idler gear Rod big end outer shell Crank pin bearing surface Tappet Adjustment Caps - There is still the question / problem of the DriveSide Flywheel and Shaft. I tested it in the lath and it is very obviously screwed up. Where and what is bent ? Where all of the parts OK and then I screwed them up during assembly when I used two index pins that got stuck and may have bent things up ? During the official alignment proceedure what is supposed to bend when one hammers it: shafts ? wheel webs ? the pin to wheel fit ? the shaft to wheel fit ? - The oil pump is not in working condition. It has all been cleaned up but it does not turn freely. This whole zink casting setup is a mess. I think that it some what locked up on final re-assembly with a minimum of Permetex applied to seal it from leaks. - Recall that there is a necessary re-assembly order: .... Install the Tappet Guides Install the Tappets Install the Shafts for the Cams and Idler Gear ....
