MSU Physics Department Potentiometer and Bridge Documentation Project ------------------------------------------------ Rev. 1-Sept-2014 We have a number of potentiometers, bridges, and associated galvanometers. Many are from Peter Schroeder's collection and others are from ones that I have saved. We have a number of the manuals for these instruments that came either from Peter's collection or from manuals that I pulled out of the "trash". Starting in the summer of 2014 I thought that it would be interesting to learn: what Physics experiments were these potentiometers and bridges used for and who used them. I *assume* that they were used for temperature measurement and for metals transport studies. I have evidence from the names in some manuals that the Physics research users included: Schroeder, Bass, Donald J Montgomery, Blatt, Forstat, and Carl Foiles. Basically every Physics experimentalist had a potentiometer but I *think* that these are the people who used the potentiometers that we still have in the Spence Scientific Instrument collection. I hope to talk with Peter Schroeder and learn what these potentiometers were used for and who used them. I'm going to focus on the potentiometers (and not the galvanometers) because I expect that it will be easier for Peter and others to remember the potentiometers. From names in various manuals or on other written material (e.g. catalogs) I think that I can make the following associations: Montgomery L&N Mueller Temperature Bridge Model 8067 1957 L&N Galvanometer Model 2430 1956 L&N K3 Potentiometer 1956 Schroeder Cambridge Potentiometer Model 44248 1962 Micro-Step Blatt Rubicon No 2768 1962 Bass Honeywell Rubicon Model 2780 1964 Foiles L&N Model 7556 6-Dial 1970 List of the 17 Potentiometers and Bridges that we have: Cabinet C1 Potentiometer Honeywell Rubicon No. 2768 Purchased by Prof. F. J. Blatt ~1962 Potentiometer L&N No. 706456 Potentiometer L&N No. 8067 Potentiometer L&N K3 Cabinet C2 Potentiometer L&N K3 Kelvin Bridge large and heavy Cabinet C4 Potentiometer Honeywell Rubicon model 2780 We have a manual for this. It has a wood case, bakelite panel, wood cover. Originally this was a Rubicon type "B" Potentiometer. Could be about 1957. 3 ranges, 2 decade switches and a 2 decade readout slide wire. Note there was another of these potentiometers in Cabinet C6 Box S8. One of these 2780 belongs to Jack Bass. Potentiometer Honeywell Rubicon model 2779 This is PA-7977. We have the manual for it. It is a very rational low thermo-EMF 0.01 uV design in a metal case. ---> Note there are probably some toxic batteries still in this potentiometer. Cabinet C5 Potentiometer L&N No. 635820 It has a wood case and is missing its wood cover. It is a potentiometer with a big 10 turn slide-wire crank handle. This is basically the same as the potentiometer from box S18. Potentiometer Rubicon model 2703 This is PA-6559. It has a wood case and cover. I think that we do not have the manual. Potentiometer L&N No. 1036527 This has a painted on label "H-467". It has a wood case and wood cover. It is a potentiometer with a big 10 turn slide-wire crank handle. This is basically the same as the potentiometer from box S2. Cabinet C6 Potentiometer L&N K5 This is a L&N K5 No. 7555 Potentiometer. It is PA-8652. We have the manual. Potentiometer Rubicon This potentiometer is PA-6568 with a wood case and wood cover. It has "Rm 5" painted on it which probably tells us who it belonged to. I believe it is a Rubicon No. 2780 Type B. I believe it is the same as the Rubicon in Cabinet C4 from Box S7. We have the manual for it. Potentiometer L&N No. 421210 This is a "Student Potentiometer" in a wood case with a wood cover. Thermocouple Bridge Thwing Albert Instrument Co. This is PA-6211. It has a wood case and a hinged wood cover. Thwing-Albert were/are in Philadelphia. It has "Rm-40" painted on it which probably tells us who it belongs to. It is modified ? Potentiometer Portable L&N No. 7655-S. This is PA-2078. It has in a wood case with a hinged wood cover - clearly made for portable use.
