Created in the 1750's by French astronomer Nicolas Louis de La Caille, the constellation was originally called L'Atelier du Scuplteur, the sculptor's workshop. It is a large constellation but contains no bright stars. It is difficult to see from most of the United States since it never rises high above the horizon. The constellation can be located east of the bright star Fomalhaut, in the constellation of Piscis Astrinus, the southern fish.
