Physics 422 -- Fall 2012

Homework #6, due Friday Oct. 19 at beginning of class

1. [5 pts]    Marion & Thornton problem 11.14. Hint: Using the parallel axis theorem and the moment of inertia tensor of a sphere can save you a lot of integration!

2. [5 pts]    Marion & Thornton problem 11.24. Do part (b) only.

3. [5 pts]    Marion & Thornton problem 11.25:
(a) Find the moment of inertia, but let the two densities be arbitrary rho1 and rho2 instead of rho and 2*rho.
Again a bit of thought can save a lot of integration in calculating the necessary moment of inertia!

(b) Find the Lagrangian, using the angle theta of the wheel as the generalized coordinate.

(c): Use the Lagrangian to obtain the equation of motion.
