PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY COLLOQUIUM TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 4:10 p.m., Room 118 Physics-Astronomy Building Refreshments at 3:45 p.m. in Room 224 (Note: From 3:15-3:45pm in Room 224, students can meet for an informal discussion with Dr. Krisch.) VIOLENT COLLISIONS OF SPINNING PROTONS: PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE A. D. Krisch Randall Lab of Physics University of Michigan Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1120, U.S.A. There will first be a review of: violent proton-proton collisions; the history of polarized proton beams; and the unexpected, and still unexplained, large transverse spin effects found in high transverse momentum proton-proton spin experiments at the ZGS, AGS and Fermilab. Next, there will be discussions about: Siberian snakes and their early tests at the IUCF Cooler Ring; their future use for polarized proton and electron beams at RHIC, MIT-Bates and possibly HERA. The final topic will be the recently approved SPIN@U-70 Experiment on the spin dependence of the violent collisions of 70 GeV protons at IHEP-Protvino near Moscow.
