Physics and Astronomy Colloquium Tuesday, April 23, 2002 4:10 p.m., Room 118 Physics-Astronomy Building Refreshments will be served combined with the P-A Departmental Awards ceremony which will be held from 3:00-4:00 outside room 224 PA Bldg. The Sun (and Moon) from Big Bear Solar Observatory Philip R. Goode Big Bear Solar Observatory New Jersey Institute of Technology Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO) is one of four solar observatories capable of making high resolution observations of the Sun, which are critical to understanding the dynamics of our magnetically active star. The drive to understand our star arises from both scientific and practical reasons. Data from BBSO have provided a seismic sounding of the solar interior, which have advanced our knowledge of how our star lives its life. Recently, we have been observing the dark side of moon, or earthshine, to quantify global warming.
