PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY COLLOQUIUM Thursday, October 5, 2006 4:10P.M. 1415 Biomedical & Physical Sciences Bldg. Refreshments at 3:30p.m. in Rm. 1400 BPS Bldg. Speaker: Georg Bollen Michigan State University Title: LEBIT - Smashed Atoms Tamed Abstract: With the Low-Energy Beam and Ion Trap facility LEBIT at the NSCL we have demonstrated that rare isotopes produced by fast-beam fragmentation can be slowed down and prepared such that high-precision experiments with ions at rest become possible. Penning trap mass measurements performed on short-lived rare isotopes provide important information for the test of fundamental interactions, for nuclear structure studies and for nuclear astrophysics. The results obtained with LEBIT will be summarized and discussed together with future plans to extend the new low-energy physics program at the NSCL.
