For this reason, it is highly recommended that you circle your answers to all the problems on the exam sheets, and write the relevant calculations in the space between the problems.

Sample Final Exams: Sample 1 Sample 2

Note: Some of the final exam problems may be similar to past exam problems, or to some homework problems. In order to test the understanding of the physics behind these problems, details may have been varied, hence the answers may also have changed. You will do well by thinking carefully about the physics content of all the problems, whether they appear to be familiar or not, before choosing the correct answer.

As announced by an e-mail to all registered students, and by class announcements, those who have conflicts can take a makeup exam some time on November 6 (to be arranged with the instructor). You need to do this by Thursday evening, November 1. A schedule will be made up according to the information you provide. You will be notified by e-mail before 5 pm Friday November 2, about when and where to take the makeup exam.

Solutions to Midterm I Exam Problems: Form A ; Form B ; Form C ; Form D

Brief comments about Midterm Results and Grades:

We realize that some students are concerned about their scores on the midterm. They
have been graded by the university scoring office; and we will double check the
grades before class on Friday. We will briefly discuss the exam results, as
well as what we are planning to do about the grades, at the beginning of class
on Friday.

Solutions to the problems are now available on the Web (cf. above).
Please go through the solution to see what you did incorrectly (and try to learn
from the experience). If there are any problems you do not understand, please
go to the help-room next week to discuss them with the TAs and tutors.
If you do not get the help you expect from the help-room, let us know and we
will do the best we can to address the problem.

Profs. Brown and Tung

Honors Option

Students in phy231 who are members of the Honors College can qualify for Honors in the course by achieving at least a 3.0 grade and by tutoring in the help room for a minimum of 3 hours per week. You will find the experience
rewarding, since answering questions often deepens your own understanding of the logic and power of scientific thinking, and greatly helps your communications skill -- both very important for your career development, no
matter what your chosen field is.

If you qualify and are interested, please sign up in the class, or send a e-mail to Professor Brown as soon as possible. Please give your name, PID and student number. Once signed up, the duty starts the second week, September 5.
