A modern constellation created by astronomer Nicolas Louis de La Caille, between 1750 and 1754. The constellation represents the drawing compasses used by carpenters and navigators of the time. The constellation can be found directly to the east of Rigel Kentaurus (Alpha Centauri) to those living in southern latitudes.
