A modern constellation that first appeared in 1679. It was formed from stars that were once part of Canis Major. The constellation can be found directly south of the constellation of Orion. A southerly constellation, it can be seen by those living in the southern United States. Another name for the constellation is Columba Noae, Noah's Dove.
