Created around 1752 by the astronomer Nicolas Louis de La Caille, the original name of the constellation was Reticulum Rhomboidalis. The constellation was created to commemorate the reticle, a grid used in eyepieces of telescopes to provide scale and location. Today the constellation is simply known as a net.
