Can I program an FPGA in C?

During a recent visit to CERN, I was discussing ways for physicists to effectively contribute to FPGA programming with Nick Ellis of Atlas. He pointed me to Mike Levine and the Handel-C FPGA programming language. Here's what I've learned so far.

Celoxica is the company selling Handel-C. For a lab, pricing is in the 10K/seat range I believe; for universities 1K for 3 seats, 3 yrs; 4K for 50 seats. They also sell Xilinx prototyping boards for 10K; 4-7K for universities.
