History of Stockelsdorf

Stockelsdorf was founded in 1303 by Squire Burchardt von Otteshude. It was meant as an alternative trading post to Lübeck. It is said that he had his servant Stockel clear the forest for a new settlement and therefore the name.

Although Stockelsdorf could never really compete as a trading center that did not mean that it had nothing. Its Fayence production was highly valued. The manufacturers of Lübeck were jealous of the success of the smaller neighbor and came over the border - Stockelsdorf belonged to Holstein whereas Lübeck was a free city - to vandalize the factory.

In more recent years the relationship to Lübeck has usually been a better one although the people of Stockelsdorf might take it as an insult if you called it a subburb. (At the same time they will proudly talk about being born in Lübeck. ;-)
